Thursday, January 20, 1994 you can't live the love, at least experience the story in "The Bridges of Madison by Jai Tombakaris Collegian Siqtr "Let go of this kincaid-the voice was hissing now-it's out running you. But there was nowhere left to go, except toward liluitma Johnson." "The Bridges of Madison County," by Robert James Waller is a timeless romance novel. No wonder it's been on the best-sellers list and is soon to be made into a motion per• Robert Kincaid, a photographer for National Geographic, goes on assignment to take pictures of some historical bridges in lowa. He is a free-spirited bachelor whose work keeps him on the move and always comes first; that is until he meets Fransesca Johnson. She's an lowan farm wife, who's tired of the same day-in day-out routine. She remembers her youth and the dreams she County" once had, but pretends to be content with her life. Kincaid and Johnson fall in love; each fulfilling something that's missing in the other's life. Kincaid finds a sense of belonging and Johnson learns how to "live again." What I liked most about the book was that it didn't necessarily have a happy ending. Johnson and Kincaid aren't together. but each has not gone away empty handed. And they both share a love that is "There are songs that cone free from the blue-eyed grais, from the dust of a thousand country roads. This is one of them." If you're looking for a good book to read, check out "The Bridges of Madison County." If you don't read the book, go see the movie. You may never experience this love, but you should experience the story. ENTERTAINMENT and everlasting. "Wayne's World II" fairs better than "Bogus by Scott Moore Corkeigue Stqf I know what you're thinking. "Another sequel? All sequels do is capitalize on the first movie's successr "Wayne's Wald II," however, refreshingly breaks the mold while making some valid social commentary on the situation in Bosnia-NOV!! There was absolutely no reason for a second Wayne's World movie except to make gobs and gobs of cash for those involved. "Wayne's World II" lacks much of the charm of the first "Wayne's World," but fans of the latter should enjoy the former. Once again, Mike Myers and Mathau and Lemmon return in "Grumpy Old Men" by JCR Dugan Caked's. Stqr The 'Odd Couple' is back! Jack Lemmon and Walter Madam star in the modern day version "Grumpy Old Men." The two are now neighbors Journey" Dana Canvey fill the shoes of Wayne Campbell and Garth Allow, respectively. The new movie picks up where the last one left off: Wayne is still going steady with Cassandra (Tia Came), and both he and Garth have moved out of their parents' houses. The two friends still do their local cable TV show. The action begins when Wayne is visited in a dream by the ghost of Jim Morrison. The former Doors' leader tells Wayne that he must organize a gigantic rock concert in Aurora, Illinois. The struggle to put on this concert, dubbed "Waynestock," comprises much of the movie's plot. Along the wa , Wayne duels and still fighting after 30 years. Their daily routine is filled with tricks and antics (ie: putting dead fish in the back seat of each other's can). You can distinguish the two by the friendly names they have for one another. "Putz" (Jack Lenunon) and "Moron" (Walter MANI). Besides just "hating" each other, they've got something much bigger to fight about now. That's a new neighbor across the street, a beautiful, exotic woman played by Ann Margret. So the competition begins to win her heart while the loser "The Brief:" book the by Portia Kelly Cdkeiat Ss After the explosive release of the best selling novel by John Grisham, "The Pelican Brief" doesn't live up to its standards in the movie theaters. The performances by Julia Roberts, who plays Darby Shaw, and Denzel Washington. playing the character of Gray Grantham, are satisfactory but they can't save the movie. The movie is highly prolonged and would save time, and probably the audience's boredom, if the point was reacted ditectly. Two Supreme Court justices are murdered because of their feelings towards the environment and their invovlement in passing a bill which some powerful people in the oil drilling business do not want passed. Darby. the yotmg. intelligent law student, beats all odds and comes up with a brief that hits Cassandra's father for her hand in marriage, Garth finally gets the girl, Wayne breaks up with Cassandra (again), and everybody goes to an Aerosmith concert. Does Wayne succeed with Waynestock? Will he win back Cassandra? I'm not going to tell you (unless you come up and ask me in person), but I will tell you that the answers can be found in "Wayne's World II." Overall, "Wayne's World II" is a predictable, decent sequel: better than "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," but not nearly as good as "The Empire Strikes Back." The moment that made seeing the movie worthwhile for me was when Drew Barrymore cameoed as a Swedish secretary. Schwing! will be left in the cold. Who will get the girl? (I will tell you, one of them does earn her love!) The title to this movie says it all, "Grumpy Old Men;" that's what it is about. I thought it was very entataining and by the sounds of the movie theater, everyone else did too. If you're looking for something to make you laugh, "Grumpy Old Men" is it. Oh, and make sure you stick around for the credits, because there are some very funny mistake scenes from the making of the movie! Pelican read the and skip movie the murders right on the nose. But what follows her is a string of murders and dangerous encounters with killers. She persuades Washington Herald journalist Gray Grantham to expose her brief out into the public and help her stay alive. As you can see (or read) the story is very good, but it's made for a novel and not a movie. The action scenes are boring, plus the drama is lost in the transition to the big screen. In my opinion (if you care), I think that if they would have stuck with the irony and dramatics of the novel, it could have been a picture you would really enjoy. Take my advice, go to the nearest bookstore and purchase a paperback or hardcover version of "The Pelican Brief." And if you don't Isle to read, wait till the movie coma out on video, because this is one movie you don't want to waste money on. Page
