It serves the purpose of a toothpick, buttonhook and hair-fastener; but all this is no excuse for having one in your vest pocket when your wife don't know where it comes from." " Ma, has sister Floy ever traveled anyr1" "No, child, no." " Then, when I wasalyin under the sofa Sunday night and sister and Mr. John came in from church and was a sittin' iu the big rockin' cheer, how come her to say that the nicest land she ever was in was Lapland?" .ST " I dreamt about you last night, Bob," said Fred. The family physician said that " rock candy and whisky equally divided" would be good for the colds. The father got a supply of these articles, and divided them equally, giving his little daughter all the candy and taking all the whisky himself. gy " George," said a schoolmistress to one of her unruly scholars, " why is it you behave so badly ? When you first came to school you were obedient, sub missive, and willing to learn ; now you are just the contrary." " Well, to tell the truth, marm," eald George, "I was not much acquainted then." W Little Billy was told, Never ask for a thing at the table. Little boys should wait until they are served." The other day little Billy was forgotten In the distribution, and was not served at all. What could he do? Presently, after reflecting seriously, he asked, " Mamma, when little boys starve to death do they go to heaven V" A Sly Old Joker. A victim of omnibus pickpockets de termined to get even with them, so he put into his pocket another pocketbook, containing only a slip of paper ,on which were written the words, This time, you rascal, you've lost the rewards of your labor I" He got into the same omnibus and waited, resolved to have the first pickpocket that meddled with him arrested. Twenty minutes passed and nothing happened, and, tired of waiting, he got out, having first assured himself that his pocketbook was safe. He opened it, and, In place of his piece of white paper, there was a blue one, which he unfolded, and read as follows " What a sly joker you are! " A Satisfactory Excuse. A clergyman once rebuked an eccen tric old fellow for sleeping during divine service. " I never sleep while at church," re turned the accused. " But you sit with your head back and your eyes closed." " One does not necessarily sleep when one closes one's eyes, else I might accuse you of praying in your sleep," rejoined the cunning old chap. " Then pray tell mo why you sit with closed eyes throughout the entire ser mon," asked the preacher with great earnestness. " Well, replied the other, since you press me so closely I must tell you. You see I have a scolding wife who lectures me soundly for the merest trifle, and she somewhat resembles you when she scolds. So when you become excited I can almost imagine it is my wife lectur ing me, and I close my eyes to shut out the sight." The minister questioned no further, and the eccentrlo chap was permitted to tike his Sunday unp unquestioned.
