Hands and Feet In Agriculture. Peter Henderson, In an address at a recent agricultural convention, said that although engaged In gardening opera tions for over a quarter of a century, it had only been lately that he fully real ized how Indispensable Is the use of the feet In sowing and planting. In the sowing of seeds he thought millions were lost annually through neglect of " firming" the ground around the seeds. During the past dry season, enormouB losses were Incurred by market gardeners and other cultivators of cabbages, cauli flowers, celery, etc., mainly because they persisted in sowing the seeds with out taking the precaution to firm the soil by rolling. His own practice Is, after plowing, harrowing and leveling the land smoothly, to draw lines by the " marker," which makes a furrow about two Inches deep and a foot apart; after the man who sows the seed follows another who with the ball of his foot presses down his full weight on every Inch of soil in the drill where the seed has been sown. The rows are then lightly leveled longitudinally with the rake, a light roller is then passed over them and the operation is done. By this method his cabbage and celery crops have never once failed, and what is true in these seeds is equally true of all seeds requiring to be sown during the late spring or summer months. On July 2nd, 1874, as an experiment, he sowed twelve rows of sweet corn and twelve rows of beets, treading In after sowing every alternate row of each. In both cases, those trod in came up in four days, while those un firmed remained twelve days before starting, and would not then have germinated had rain not fallen, for the soil was as dry as dust when planted. The result was that the seeds that had been trodden in, grew freely from the start, and matured their crops to a marketable condition by fall, while the rows unpressed did not mature, as they were not only eight days later in germinating, but the plants were also to some extent enfeebled by being partially dried In the loose dry soil. The same season In August he treated seeds of turnips and spinach in the same way. Those trod in germinated at once and made an excellent crop, while those unpressed germinated feebly and were eventually nearly all burned out by a continuance of dry, hot air, penetrating through the loose soil to the tender rootlets. A large proportion of the blame often laid at the doors of nurserymen on account of selling dead trees, he attributes to the neglect of growers to compact the soil about the roots. Useful Hints. A solution of cider vinegar and pure glycerine iu equal parts will cure the most stubborn chapped hands on even the thinnest skin. The common kerosene,-now to be found in every household, is a cheap cure for chilblains ; a cloth being satu rated with it and wrapped about the feet before retiring. A French chemist asserts that if tea be ground like coffee, immediately before hot water is poured upon it, it will yield nearly double the amount of its exhilarating qualities. Extreme cold produces the same per ception on the skin as great heat. When mercury is frozen at forty degrees below zero the sensation is the same as that of touching red-hot iron. A small piece of chalk put in a pitcher of water, without imparting any taste whatever to the same, will yet exercise a corrective effect upon the stomach of any one afflicted with acidity, or heart ' burn, as it is familiary called. To cure sore throat pour a few drops of spirits of camphor on a lump of sugar, and allow it to dissolve in the mouth every hour. The third and fourth enables the patient to swallow with ease. This has cured in the last stages of the disease. A cure for whooping cough a tea spoonful of castor-oil to a teaspoonful of molasses. Give a teaspoonful of the mixture whenever the cough is trouble some. It will afford relief at once and in a few days it will effect a cure. The same medicine relieves the croup, how ever violent the attack. No Good Preaching. No man can do a good job of work, preach a good sermon, try a law suit well, doctor a patient, or write a good article when he feels miserable and dull, with sluggish brain and unsteady nerves, and none should make the attempt in such a condition when it can be so easily and cheaply removed by a little Hop Bitters.
