Admluistrator. Lewis Potter, Attorney, April 1, 187a. 6t DR SCHWARTZ In choosing a wife, says the Phrenological Journal, "be governed by her chin." The worst of that Is, that after having chosen a wife, one is apt to be governed in the same way. HT An old bachelor, who partleularly bated literary women, asked an author ess if she could throw any light on kissing. "I could," said ahe, looking archly at him, " but I think it's better in the dark." 15" An IrlBliinan, at the imminent risk of his life stopped a runaway horse recently in a neighboring city. The owner came up after a while. aud quietly remarked, "Thank you, sir." "An' filth, an' how are ye goin' to divide that between two of us J!" replied 1'at. Dr. Newman spoke, In a recent sermon of "the sad funeral procession" which followed Abel to his grave. An Irreverent woman in the audience nudged her companion and whispered : "Not such a large procession, but very select. None but the first families," The following testimonial of a certain patent medicine speaks fox Itself : "Dear Sir: Two months ago my wife could scarcely speak. She has taken two bottles of your 'Life Itenewer' and now she can't speak at all. Please send me two more bottles. I wouldn't be without It." fsj-' ' And Moses was an austere man," read the minister from the Bible. "Dar, now,you dun hear dat, Sam 1 De Script ures say Moees was a oyster man, an you dun flung at me sellu' oysters wasn't a 'spec-table business. If it is good enough for Moses, it is 'spectable 'nough for me." Pulpit Themes. " What shall I preach about ?" said a minister to the pastor of a colored flock which he was to address. " Well, mos' any subject will be 'ceptable," was the reply ; " only I'd like to gib you one word oh caution." "Ah I whatlsthat V" "Well, ef I was you, I'd tech werry light on de Ten Commandments." "Indeed I and why?" "Oh, cos I hab notise dar dey mos'l always hab a damp'nln' effect on de congregation." During a recent thunder storm near Memphis, Tenn., a negro was severely kicked by a vicious mule, and just as he was picking himself up, a stroke of lightning hit the mule, and killed him on the spot. " Well, dar! " exclaimed the negro, "ef dls chile baint got pow'ful frens to 'venge his Insults, den dere's no use tryin' to hab faith in anytlng." What They Lived On. ' A legal gentleman met a brother law yer one day last week, and the following conversation took place : " Well, Judge, how is business V" " Dull, dull. I am living on faith. It is dull with me too but I am one ahead of you for I am living on hope. "Ah," replied a bystander, "I am ahead of both of you, for I am living on charity." &rWe heard of a rather amusing reply given recently at a ball by an American girl In London society, who had strayed away from the ball-room. Her mother subsequently discovered her In a remote nook with a gentleman, who had his arm around her waist, while she rested the tips of her pretty little fingers or, his manly shoulder. " Daughter, what's all this J"' exclaimed the. irate mamma. Saucy cheeks looked up calmly, and replied : " Mamma, al low me to introduce to you Captain X . I had promised him a dance, but I was so tired that I couldn't keep my word, and I'm just giving him a sitting-still waltz instead." What Day? The following story is told of a Metho dist minister, T. S. Day, who received an appointment on a circuit in a West ern State: On the first Sunday morning, he started from his domicile to the meeting house, half a mile distant. The minis ter observed several iys playing in and about a pond of water, bathing, making " mud pies," and indulging in divers other things incident to the recklessness of youth. He advanced slowly towards the crowd, and addressing an intelligent looking boy, bright as a prairie flower, said, " Come here, my eon." "The boy stepped up to him, and the others collected around. "Do you know," said the minister. " what day this isl"' " Oh, yes !" they all shouted, "it ia Mr. Day, our new Methodist minister."
