There ha been eoine diversity of opin ion bb to the best time to cut wheat, judging from the common practice of termers. It Is genernlly cut when dead ripe, or at least when the grain lias become html. Thin In no doubt an error, and one of more importance than many suppose, It should be remembered that wheat 1b composed of gluten, starch and bran. Gluten la the nourishing quality of the grain, makes the flour stick together in the hands of the baker, and gives weight to the grain and there is the greatest quantity of gluten In the grain, Just when the straw Is yellow two or three Joints from the ground, the head turns downward, and you can mash a grain between your thumb and linger without producing any milk. It may therefore be set down as an indis putable truth that every duy the wheat stands after this stage of ripeness, the gluten decreases in quantity and the bran increases in thickness, while also there is danger of rust, which usually makes its appearance timing the lust ten days of June. We give these facts in time that the farmer can take advantage of them the present season. Harness Galls. It is a cruel thing to work a horse that has a neck worn raw by a badly ilttlng collar. In putting horses that have been comparatively Idle during the winter to the hard work of the plow and harrow, painful and unsightly sores are often caused which, unless cared for at once, prove of long staudlug, perma nently disfiguring the animal. When the abrasion first appears, give the horse a day or two of rest. It is better to do this even if important work is some what delayed. Chloride of zinc diluted with fifty parts of water and applied with a soft sponge, is a good astringent, serving to harden and toughen the skin. But after all the best way to prevent galling is to have the collar, and every part of the harness touching the horse, a perfect fit. Keep it well oiled and pliable. Then inure the animal to hard work gradually and kindly. A Cold Dinner. Says a Siberian traveler: Our dinner party was extremely merry. Each one laid his stores under contribution. Some brought out frozen bread, others frozen cavalre, others frozen preserves, others again sausages that could not be bent even if put across the knee and pulled with the strength of both arms. Can you imagine, without laughing, the appearance of seven half famished people sitting at a table with thirty different dishes before them, and unable to touch one except at the risk of break ing their teeth. Nothing could be done, except to wait patiently for the various dishes to be thawed by sitting on them. At the close of the dinner we ate excel lent fruit, which had been kept frozen. Throughout Siberia, as soon as very cold weather sets inkall fruits are placed out of doors, with a northern exposure, that the sun may never touch them. They are frozen through and through, and retain their flavor as completely as if they had just been plucked from the tree. Insects on Plants. A Michigan lady writes to Mr. Vick, the florist, that to kill insects she uses one teuspoonful of kerosene to a gallon of water, and sprinkles it on the plants with a hand-broom. It destroys green files, currant worms and other pests, and was used without injury on fucschias, geraniums, callas and other plants. Good For Plants. Collect some soot from a chimney or stove where wood Is used as fuel, put into an old pitcher and pour hot water upon it. When cool use it to water your plants every few days. The efl'ect upon plants is wonderful in producing a rapid growth of thrifty shoots, with large thick leaves and a great number of richly-tinted rosea. 3T Hens do much better when allow ed a free range outdoors than when confined. In France it lias been found that with fowls allowed considerable freedom, twenty percent, only of their eggs fail to hatch ; with less freedom forty per cent, failed, and in ; close con finement sixty per ceut. were not hatched. O" Many a fine horse is ruined by driving him too fast immediately after a hearty meal. If the journey must be resumed without delay, the horse should be driven very slowly for a half hour or more, when the speed may be safely increased. Newport Advertisements. It. S.
