We invite enmmnntciktlnns frnm nil perftnns who are Informed In nutters properly beluuKinw to tliti de partment. . ...... v.- 4 Making Lumbor With Straw, Mr. S. H. Hamilton, of Bushnell, 111., has discovered a process for making hard wood lumber out of common wheat straw, with all the effect of polish and finish which is attainable on the hardest of black walnut and mahog any, at as little cost as clear pine lumber can be manufactured for. The process of manufacture as explained by Mr. Hamilton is as follows ; Ordinary straw board such as is manufactured at any paper mill is used for the purpose. As many sheets are taken as is required to make the thickness of the lumber desired. These sheets are passed through a chemical solution, which thoroughly softens up the fibre and completely saturates it ; the whole is then pressed through a succession of rollers, dried and hardened during the passage, as well as polished, and comes out of the end of the machine hard, dry lumber, ready for use. It is claimed that the chemical properties hardening in the fibre entirely prevent water soaking, and render the lumber combustible only in very hot fire. The hardened finish on the outside also makes it impervious to water. The sample exhibited could hardly be told from hard wood lumber, and in sawing it the difference could not be detected. It is susceptible of a very high polish, and samples of imita tion of marble, mahogany, etc., were shown, which might deceive the most experienced eye. Not only, does Mr. Hamilton claim a substitute for lumber in sash, doors and blinds and finished stuff, but also a substitute for black walnut and other woods in the manu facture of all kinds of fine furniture, coffins, etc., and also an excellent sub stitute for marble in marble top tables, mantle pieces, bureaus, etc. He claims that it will not warp in the least. St. Louis Journal of Commerce. How to Patch Clothes. I shall begin with the perhaps orig inal axiom that a patch must be rectan gular. A round or a " crooked" one will Inevitably thrust itself into notice, as it is impossible to match the threads. Then a patch should never be "laid on," but always " set in." To this end first cut away carefully by a thread all that Is in the least worn, and turn back and baste down and even seam all around. The corners may be slashed slightly in a diagonal direction to keep them square. Then to this opening fit the patch exactly, with the edges turned and basted, and sew it in, "over and over" on the wrong side with thread of the precise shade and very fine, sew ing alternate opposite sides to avoid trouble with the corners. The extra thickness caused by the folded corners of the patch itself should be cut out after sewing, and a little fine darning added to keep them secure. Now slightly dampen and press on the wrong side, and you have a neat piece of mending which cannot be seen a few feet away. Figures and striped goods must, of course, be carefully matched; heavy woolen fabrics, such as men and boys wear, need not have seams turned, the clean-cut edge being enough to hold. To Keep Beds From Having Bngs. A correspondent writes : " I see no end of recipes for cleansing beds, and, as a hotel-keeper have perhaps, paid over $300 for various nostrums. My plan is, during the next month, June, to have all my beds taken to pieces, to scrub all the Joints and ends with water and soap, and then to use any hard varnish for the ends, slats, etc. I know of no other method as easy or as thorough. I have used this in Georgia and Florida where vermin abound. Haunted Me. Debt, poverty and suffering haunted me for years, caused by a sick family and large bills for doctoring, which did no good. I was completely discouraged, until one year ago, by the advice of my pastor, I procured Hop Bitters and com menced their use, and in one month we were all well, and none of us have been 1 sick a day Bince ; and I want to say to all poor men; you can keep your families well a year with Hop Bitters for less than one doctor's visit will cost. A Workingman. Potato water, or water in which potatoes have been boiled, is now reo commended in various quarters as not only an effective but an Immediate remedy for lice on cows and other cattle, also for ticks. The affected parts are to be bathed with the "potato water; one application is generally sufficient. This remedy (if remedy it proves) has the merit of being exceedingly simple, easily employed, and without danger of injury to the cattle. New York World.
