BORERS. lt me siiRRPst wlmt niny rrove a perfrct remedy for borers in trees. YenroBKn, when Hiere Mood about a dozen locust trees nloii the street and north of the squnre, anil borers were evidently destroying them, old Dr. Reed, a druniflst. wild he saved a large plantation of lopuath similarly afTcisted, by boring a small augur hole In half of Ms trees, putting; a teHspoonful of calo mel In, and carefully plugging It up As his hearers laughed, he bhUI, "try It on one of the worst of those trees, leave the rest alone; It will live; they will die." It whs done. That one Is the sole remaining tree to-tiny the rest all died within two years. I tried it on an apple tree badly affected by borers, five years ago. Not a borer Is in It and it Is still thriving. I am told the borers never quits tree (111 they killed it. Is it so y Now Is about the time to try it, as the sap will soon be passing up from the roots again, and this will send the calomel through the tree. Certainly it is a cheap, harmless experiment, and suggests treatment Ih the same manner. It will make the tree look drooping after a few days, but it soon recovers. There are drugs, etc., that the sap dissolves and carries through the tree in the same way ; and other diseases may be tried in the same manner. I Intend to try It for pear blight. Calo mel is death to worms, they say, In the animal, why not in the tree i Sowing Wheat. A very important point In sowing or drilling winter grain is to cover the seed as Utile as possible, to ensure sprouting. The old fashioned Idea that deep cover ing will prevent the plant from being thrown out by winter's frost I or ouht to be exploded. The frost always pen etrates much deeper than the roots. We cannot prevent the Boil from being alternately lifted and dropped as It expands or contracts. All we can do Is to get the roots in the best position to Withstand Injury, and this is done by having them spread horizontally not very far below the surface. A tap-root on the wheat plant in the fall Is worse than useless. It is sure to be snapped by the lifting up of the soil, and with all the fibrous roots below. If we can spread the roots from the crown on either side, the plant and earth will lie., raised together with little injury to the roots. This Is the reason why we want a compact seed bed for wheat. It forces the growth of roots laterally Instead of downward. With a good growth of top falling over these lateral roots, the wheat plant is as well prepared for winter as is possible. The usual fault iu drilling is in getting the seed too deep. On soft mucky soil this is almost Inevitable, as the drill wheels sink below the sur face and increase the depth at which the tubes deposit the seed. Using tlte roller once or twice, if necessary, to compact the soil, will remove this difficulty. American Farmer. Water-Proof Boots. It is not always dtsirable that boots should be absolutely water-proof, as whatever will keep water out will keep it in, and whoever has worn India rub ber boots for any length of time, knows that retaining the prespi ration of the feet soon puts hem In a very unpleas ant, half parboiled condition that is not desirable. Still water-proof boots are useful in an emergency, to be worn for a short time such as doing the chores in bad weather. A pair of good rubber ' boots will answer this purpose, or a pair of common cowhide boots may be made water-proof after the method of the New England fishermen. These people ex posed to all kinds of weather, have for a century used the following compound : Tallow, 4 oz; rosin and beeswax, 1 oz. each ; melt together, then stir in n eats foot oil, equal in bulk to the rnektd articles. The boots are warmed before a fire and this composition is rubbed into the leather, soles and uppers, by m&ans of a rag. Two applications Will j make tne learner quite waior-prooi. Corn in the East. The extensive Eastern States gave up corn growing to a considerable extent tome years ago, believing that it was not worth while to grow in the East what they could afford to raise in the West for ten cents per bushel. But of late years they have found that it is not altogether the grain 'which pays, but that the fod der is worth as much for cattle feed as tue grain is worth. Last year more corn was raised in Maine than ever before, and it is thought now profitably.
