Red Barn bethtown on Falmouth Rd. CALL 367-2959 October 29, 1975 CHIQUES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Rev. William A. Sharp, District Superintendent of the Lancaster District, will be the guest preacher on Sunday, November 2nd. at the 10:30 a.m. service. Previously he was the Minister of the Swarthmore United Methodist Church. In addition, he served churches in Philadelphia, Easton, Upland, and Lima. He is a graduate of the Dickinson College and Drew University. The Chiques United Methodist Church is a union of the Mount Joy and Salunga Methodist Church- es. The Mount Joy Church was begun in 1834, and Rev. T. B. Tibbals was the first Minister. Since the church continued to grow, a two- story brick church was built in 1867. This was followed by a parsonage. By 1881, the church was free of debt. The John F. Peifer Family who were members of the Mount Joy Church, invited the Ministers to conduct services in their farm house near Salunga. There reviv- als resulted in the organiza- tion of the Salunga Metho- dist Church on May 9, 1889. In 1892, the Pennsylvania Railroad planned to relocate its line, laying it out so that the double tracks would be down the middle aisle of the church. Hence, the railroad agreed to relocate the church in the Summer of 1893. ce Beginning in 1935, the Mount Joy and Salunga congregations shared the same Ministers. Since both churches re- quired extensive renova- tions, the respective con- gregations decided to unite, and build a new church between the two villages. On Easter Sunday, March 29, 1959 ground was broken for the new church edifice, built on an 8 acre piece of ground bought’ from Mr. Roy Brenneman. ' The cornerstone was laid by Dr. J. Vincent Watchorn, District Superintendent on June 7th., and Bishop Fred P. Corson consecrated the impressive new church on November 10, 1959. Rev. Menno E. Good was the Minister when the present church was built. He “was followed by Rev. Charles D. Whittaker. Rev. Woodrow W. Kern who has been the Minister for the past six years is the present Minister. Following the Service on Sunday, November 2nd. at 10:30 a.m., members and friends are invited to the Congregational Dinner at the American Legion. For reservations, call the church office: 653-5175 or Mr. Harold L. Myers, Lay Leader. 898-7418. 2
