October 15, 1975 Florin Fire Co. visits local schools : Members of the Florin Fire Company took one of the company engines and visited Kraybills Mennonite and Grandview Schools. Assistant Fire Chief, Duayne Caswell, spoke to the children on fire safety while showing the different parts of the equipment. One of the greatest thrills for the youngsters, was the demon- stration of how the nozzles can control the water, from a hard straight stream to the spread out, mushroom-like spray. The children shout- ed, giggled and simply enjoyed it all. After the demonstration, Caswell o- pened the session for questions and answers. The children showed they were paying close attention by the questions they posed. The most asked question was, “How do I get out of a burning building?’ The Assistant Chief told them first, ‘‘alert an adult, if possible, and if necessary, crawl out of the building to avoid smoke inhalation. If on the second floor, close the door to your room, open a window and shout for help. Fire men will get you out when they arrive.” Caswell impressed on the children the importance of practicing an escape route on a regular basis, ‘‘there- fore if fire occurs, you will _ Ann Shertzer; already know where to go and how to get out - this could mean the difference between life and death.” October Sth to 11th was Fire Prevention Week, with the National Theme, ‘‘Learn Not To Burn.” With this theme in mind, the Florin Fire Company sponsored a poster contest at the schools, Judges for the contest were: Mrs. Fern Ney, Mrs. Betty Ober, and Mrs. Kathryn Erb.
