Brandt, R-Lancaster, said today a shortage of home-canning jar lids will continue for the remainder of this canning season, but supplies are expected to begin catching up to demand next year. Rep. Brandt made the remarks following a day- long hearing of a Committee to Investigate the Shortage of Home Canning Lids which he attended Monday. Brandt urged home- makers to try freezing produce where possible and to be very careful canning with lids other than the traditional two-piece metal lids traditionally used by home canners. “One piece metal and plastic lids being used as emergency stand-ins for the traditional canning lid may not seal as easily and must be used with great care,” Brandt said. ‘‘Most of these ‘new concept’ lids were never intended for home canning and may present a hazard if used incorrectly.” “It is especially important that persons canning for the first time, including senior citizens who never grew their own produce before, check with their Home ve * JEFF ve XX GORM G ng For Your Dancing & Dining Pleasure Wed.
