Brandt investigates canning lid shortage
Rep. Kenneth E. Brandt,
R-Lancaster, said today a
shortage of home-canning
jar lids will continue for the
remainder of this canning
season, but supplies are
expected to begin catching
up to demand next year.
Rep. Brandt made the
remarks following a day-
long hearing of a Committee
to Investigate the Shortage
of Home Canning Lids
which he attended Monday.
Brandt urged home-
makers to try freezing
produce where possible and
to be very careful canning
with lids other than the
traditional two-piece metal
lids traditionally used by
home canners.
“One piece metal and
plastic lids being used as
emergency stand-ins for the
traditional canning lid may
not seal as easily and must
be used with great care,”
Brandt said. ‘‘Most of these
‘new concept’ lids were
never intended for home
canning and may present a
hazard if used incorrectly.”
“It is especially important
that persons canning for the
first time, including senior
citizens who never grew
their own produce before,
check with their Home

Brandt also cautioned’
housewives to purchase only
jar, lid and ring units
showing the manufacturer’s
name on both jars and lids.
‘According to the testi-.
mony taken by our commit-
tee, the jar lid shortage was
caused by a huge increase in
demand--nearly 60 percent--
which could not be handled
by manufacturers who plan
production according to
demand patterns of previous
years.
