New spirit at Donegal by Barbara Landis A few years ago Donegal students didn’t know the meaning of the words “school spirit.” There was little pride and a general attitude of antipathy among students. This has all chan- ged. Donegal has come from its pessimism into the full bloom of optimism. A good example of this positive attitude was exemplified at a pep rally held on Friday, February 14th. The ideas for this, and all pep rallies, originated with Mr. Emil Swift and the Booster Club’s pep rally committee chaired by Pat Brown. After the entire production was outlined came the difficult task of" contacting band members, cheerleaders, athletes, etc. Class officers were advised as to the rules, and the con- test to determine which class had the most school spirit began. About a week before the actual rally, stu- dents began lining the halls, creating “spirit signs” to be hung in designated areas of the gym and halls. The “wearing of the green’ was held on the day of the pep rally. This is when students try to wear as much green and white clothing as possi- ble. In the past, students have dyed hair, painted faces, and, one even had gone so far as to decorate his shaven head. Between classes was an impressive sight - green, green, every- where! Right from the opening of classes, the school was abuzz with talk of the afternoon’s events. When the time finally came, students entered the gym- nasium to the tunes of the pep band. The rally was opened with a special cheer by a group of male cheerleaders. The gym went wild with laughter at the antics of these mock cheerleaders. Next came the introduc- tion of the basketball play- ers and the wrestlers follow- ed by cheers led by the wrestling and basketball cheerleading squads. The finals of the girls’ intramural basketball tour- nament was played on 4- wheel gym skooters propell- ed by pushing with the feet. The outcome of the junior/ senior battle was victory for the latter. Finally came the com- petition to see which class would gain possession of the 20-foot tomahawk, the ro- tating trophy for excelling in school spirit. Members of each class were to create and perform an original cheer. The freshmen had 2 girls lead their cheer while the sophomore class had a group of young ath- letes perform theirs. The juniors idea of a computer reading “Failure does not compute!” and “Stop Gar- den Spot and Cocalico,” which accompanied their cheer was good enough to earn them a tie with the seniors whose cheerleaders consisted of girls in football jerseys and shouldér pads and guys in gymbloome1s and bobby socks. The giant tomahawk was presented to Joe Meszaros and Jeff Sheetz, presidents of their respective classes. The stu- dents were dismissed, but the air of pride and a type of spirit never before shown at DHS lingered on. It is now an undisputed fact that Donegal has the most spirit and holds the best pep rallies in this area. Since they have shown the desire to uphold their currently top grade reputa- tion, watch out - The Indians are on the move and noth- ing can stop that “mean green machine!!” Recent and upcoming events of interest to those who follow the Donegal winter sports are as follows: * Team will have participated in their first play-off game Second row - Coach D.
