For Information Call - Dick Prescott - 426-1789 Ni Dan Instructor Bateman gives advice! on saving pin oaks TO ALL MOUNT JOY AREA RESIDENTS: With the help of the State Department of Agricul- ture, the Borough of Mount Joy conducted a study into the reasons for the decline of many of the pin oaks inthe area. The following conditions and recom- mendations were made available to the Borough: Analysis of the soil samples taken in the area revealed the following: 1. The soil pH is 7.3; optimum pH for pin oak is 5.5; 2. The phosphorus level is low, and the potassium level is excessive; 3. The magnesium-calcium fatio was acceptable at a 1:5.8 relationship. From this information the following recommendations are given: 1. Apply 11% 1b. of either aluminum or ferrous sulfate per 100 sq. ft. to lower soil pH to 5.5. Use one-half the recommended amount of alu- minum or ferrous sulfate now. Use the second half six months later and water heavily. Use of the total recommended rate at one time could cause sulfate toxicity. 2. Apply 3% 1b. 20% superphosphate or equivalent per 100 sq. ft. 3. Do not use any Potash, this is too high at pre- sent. 4. In general the Lancaster County area is not too well suited to pin oak. 5. The use of iron chelate in the spring may im- prove the foliage color. If you wish any additional information, please call the Borough Office at 653-2300 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon- day through Friday or a reliable nursery in the area. BOROUGH OF MOUNT JOY JOSEPH S.
