There also were many other kinds of berries on the low bushes in the woods, but we were afraid to eat them for fear they might be poisonous. If defintely is ‘‘seed time”’ in the mountains. Acorns were falling from the oaks, chestnuts and various other nut trees; rhododendron blossoms had turned into seed pods, as had the wild cherry, red bud and dogwood blossoms. Milk weed pods lined the roadsides. The on- going of all these forms of vegetation seemed well- assured! A study in patience: Near our campsite Saturday morning a little girl with pigtails, jeans and a red jacket spent almost an hour trying to entice a tiny chipmunk to take a marsh- mallow from her fingers. The little animal would come out of the thicket onto the path where the little girl was sitting, quiet as a statue, hand outstretched with the white morsel. He would frisk quickly toward her, stop, dart back into the thicket, then repeat the routine, coming closer each time. Finally he came to within six inches of her hand. She never moved. But something else startled him and he darted away. When we went on to other things, the little girl was still sitting there, and later she told us that she finally threw the marsh- mallow to him. She also told us that one time a raccoon got so friendly at Tobyhanna state park that he would jump up in her father’s lap! What priceless memories that little girl is going to have to take with her into adult life!
