® September 3, 1980 Northwestern Lumberjacks Comp. to be held September 5th and 6th The Elizabethtown-Mount Joy Forest Fire Crew will again host the Northwestern Lumberjacks Championship Woodsmen Festival Com- petition on September S and 6, 1980 (rain date Sept- ember 12, 13) starting at Library storyhour resumes September 9 Kathy Bower, Anita Bren- ner, Trudy Houck and Dotty Heilig will entertain the young folk and keep the art of storytelling alive for preschool children every Tuesday morning between the months of September and May at the Mount Joy Library. The 1980-81 storyhour season will resume on September 9 for all pre- school children in Mount Joy, between the ages of 3 and 5. The library door will open at 9:30 am and the actual storyhour telling time will begin at 9:45 am. Arriving at the library ten to fifteen minutes before storytime allows the child to get a name tag, choose books, greet other children, or just relax before the storytelling begins. Although library pre- school storytimes are often looked upon by parents as free babysitting interludes, storytimes do serve a real and beneficial purpose in a child’s literary and social development plus the devel- opment of the art of mental listening. Through storytelling, a child is introduced to the magical world of children’s literature and art. The story- teller’s projection of his own enjoyment of the ability to read mav stimulate the child’s determination to master the art of reading for himself. Participation is very important to young children. For this reason each storytelling session consists of a variety of activities especially suited for preschoolers, including songs, fingerplays, creative drama and discussion. Storytime is often the child’s first group ex- perience without his Par- ents. In addition to fostering a love of literature, story- time provides the child with the opportunity to exper- ience membership in a group and a chance to interact with the storyteller and other children. For this reason storytime is not open to anyone under the age of three. Before the age of three most children are not developmentally capable of participating in a group experience, especially when there is such a wide age range in the group. Although a child may love to listen to stories on a one-to-one basis with a parent, this situation cannot be likened to that of a more formal library storytime when he is without a parent and with a group of children he may not know. Preschool children are very easily distracted by outside noises and move- ments. Therefore, late- comers will not be admitted to storytime once the stories have begun. Likewise, child- ren who leave the room during a storyhour program will not be allowed to return to storytime that particular day. checking out books at the Mount Joy Library for the storyhour period will again be used for the convenience of the story- hour mothers only.
