Did You Hear? §§§ Duane S. Gray, son of “\. James and Donna Gray, 303 Marietta Street, Mount Joy, enlisted into the U.S. Air Force Delayed Enlistment Porgram on July 10, 1980. Duane, a 1980 graduate of Donegal High School, is scheduled to leave for active duty on August 4, 1980. Upon successfully complet- ing the Air Force's six-week basic training, he is sched- uled to receive training as an Aerospace Control and Warning Systems Operator. He will be earning credits toward an associates degree in applied sciences through the Community College of the Air Force while attend- ing basic and other technical training schools. §§§ Helen Wivell of Marietta, the Information Director for the Lancaster County Farm- er’s Association, will be assisting in a tour of Lancaster County farms for the Pennsylvania House Agricultural Committee on July 23. The tour of local farms will center on the theme of ‘‘ Alternate Energy Sources for Farms and Small Businesses.’’ After inspecting the facil- ities of Floyd Horst, a farmer distilling alcohol from farm products, the representatives will be host- ed for lunch by Mr. and Mrs. Mel Wenger at the Wenger farm. Wenger is vice chairman of the agricul- tural committee. The group will also visit the farm of Miles Fry & Son, who are producing hybrid | poplars for wood alcohol. The E-Z Manufacturing Company, which specializes in forage wagons, is also on the itinerary; the E-Z Company uses sawdust for conserving energy. The group will also visit Sperry- New Holland to observe a, film on energy-saving farm equipment and see the museum. The day will conclude with a dinner at Willow Valley Farm and Restaur- ant. §§§ Dr. Robert W. Mariner, son of Dr. Thomas Mariner and the late Marion R. Mariner, former long-term residents of Mount Joy, has passed the California dental boards and has entered practice near San Diego. Dr. Mariner had previously practiced in Pennsylvania, and later, as a naval officer on assignment, served the marine corps as a dentist in Okinawa and California. §§8§ Samual Harnish, Mount Joy, was elected vice president of the Lancaster City and County Retired Public School Teachers and Employees Association. Mr. Harnish is a retired teacher and principal of the Donegal School District. He succeeds the late Durrell Hollinger as vice president of the association. §§§ Jeff Duke, a student at Donegal High School, par- ticipated in the July 6 to 11 Youth Scholars Program in Chemistry at Lebanon Valley College (Annville). He was one of 27 high school students taking part in the program which included various workshops. Jeff is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jere Duke, 750 East Main Street, Mount Joy. Student participants in the LVC program are between their junior and senior years in secondary school, show academic pro- mise, have completed one year of chemistry, are planning to attend college, and are considering either a career in chemistry or are interested * in continuing studies in chemistry. Parti- cipants live and eat on campus during the program. §§§ Marine Sgt. David L. Sanchez, son of Jacinto and Beatrice J. Sanchez of Route 3, Box 40, Mount Joy, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal. The Good Conduct Medal signifies faithful and obedi- ent service during a three- year period. To earn it, enlisted Marines must a- chieve and maintain an umblemished conduct re- cord for the entire period. Sanchez is currently serv- ing with 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp Leieune, N.C. He joined the Marine Corps in August 1976. §§§ Several local girls will be competing in the August 1 Lancaster County Poultry Queen contest to be held a the Farm and Home Center. Kristina Kauffman, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kauffman, Bainbridge RI, is one contestant. The Elizabethtown Area High School graduate is a sec- retary at Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Co., Elizabeth- town. While in school she was active in business club and orchestra. She is an . assistant secretary at Reich’s Evangelical Congre- gational Church and helps on her parent’s broiler operation. Heidi Sue Miller, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren N. Miller, Columbia R1 is also vying for the crown. She is a graduate of Manheim Central High School where she received the Manheim National Bank Business Award and was active in FHA pep club, Future Business Leaders of America and musicals. The St. Mark’s United Metho- dist Church, Mount Joy, member was employed by Manheim Area Poultry Ser- vice and now works for the Farm Credit Office, Lan- caster. Sher also helps in the family’s laying hen opera- tion. §§§ Cindy Heagy of Donegal High School will be vying for the All-Star Queen Title at the 19th annual Lancaster- Leganon County High School All-Star Charity Football Game to be played August 8. Cindy is one of 19 cheerleading representa- tives and a member of the West squad. At a banquet held Saturday, July 26, she and the other contestants will speak on ‘‘What Service to Mankind Means to Me.”’ The event is sponsored by the Sertoma Club. Cindy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Heagy, 521 Bruce Ave. Mount Joy. Not only was she involved in cheerleading for basketball and football, but she was also secretary of the student council and a member of Booster Club and senior class executive com- mittee. She won a Science Fair Award and was named to Who’s Who Among American High School Stu- dents. She was also a Donegal Student of the Month. Cindy enjoys swim- ming and walking.
