[continued from front page] weather is very similar to our own, ‘‘though perhaps a bit milder.” Diane has been commun- icating with her exchange partner who forwarded a handbook from the Cherry Tree Hill School. There are many terms listed which the American will be accust- omed to after a year in England. Sneakers, for example, are known as plim soles, sweaters are called jumpers, and volleyball is referred to as net ball. According to the instruc- tions of the handbook, old jeans and jewelry are not allowed at the school. The school year in England consists of three terms beginning in Septem- ber and terminating in mid- July. There are two-week vacations between each semester. Diane will be teaching a swimming class while in England, walking with her pupils to the ‘bath’ in Darby. Her curriculum will also include art, music and handwriting, for which a “cartridge pen’ is re- commended. “I'm going to have to get acquainted with the English version of spelling,”’ she laughs, ‘‘as well as the various dia- lects.” Diane will travel to Washington D.C. August 12 for a four-day orientation. While there she will meet the 100 other persons involved in this year’s exchange. The vivacious elementary teacher, who toured Eng- land in 1977, is looking forward to the travel opportunities while over- seas. ‘‘I plan to travel when- ever I can,’’ she says. “Our sponsors have planned many events of interest for us while we’re abroad, such as garden parties where we can meet officials, and ski trips for a holiday.”’ Here in Mount Joy, Diane is a troop committee member for Girl Scout Troop #1040 and a volunteer guide and associate member of the North Museum, Lancaster. Ske is on the negotiating committee of the Donegal Education Association and a member of the Pennsylvania and National Education Associations. She is also finance chairperson of the Mount Joy Business and Professional Women’s Club of which she has been a member for three years. relay; and Ben Kling and Kevin Jones—relay. 14 and under girls: Amy Hess—free, fly and relay; Hope Madara—back, breast and relay; and Emmy Zuch and Dee Arndt—relay. 14 and under boys: Mark Shearer—free, back and fly; and George Blassick— breast. 17 and under girls: Sherri Kinsey—free, breast and fly. 17 and under boys: Mike Jones—free, breast and relay; Rod Fellenbaum— back, fly and relay; and Pat Moran and Dan Funk— relay.
