Reading Olympics held during Feb. The Olympics have ar- rived! The March of Dimes Reading Olympics that is. Dating from February 4 to 29, students from the Donegal School District in the Beahm Junior High School, Seiler, Grandview, Riverview and Maytown Elementary Schools, grades Kindergarten through 6, will be participating in an educational fund-raising project sponsored by the Lancaster County Chapter of March of Dimes. The event was kicked-off in each school with an assembly and film featuring Dorothy Ha- mill, 1976 Olympic ice skating champion and cur- rent National Chairman of the Reading Olympics. Each child who wishes to take part enlists sponsors from their family and community friends for each book read during February. Parental support and ap- proval are required for validation of each book read. Pledges will be collected in early March after which gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three readers in each class. The purpose of the Reading Olympics is three- fold: to recognize the vital role of the total community in the campaign to protect the unborn and the new- born; to promote reading for enjoyment and as a way to build skills and interest in reading; and to help raise funds for the= educational programs and medical ser- vices provided to Lancaster County residents in order to prevent birth defects. Goodwill asking for your donations as they suffer winter reduction During the winter Good- will Industries of Lancaster County suffers a drastic reduction in donations of clothing, shoes, house- wares, household items, mirrors, antiques and art objects. These items help keep many of the handicapped people at Goodwill in training and/or gainfully employed. Goodwill pays wages to their workers from the sale of your donations at the three Goodwill stores. Donegal’s Kid Deputies are just completing the first month of their drive for Wanted Items to help eliminate this reduction. Although their returns are much higher than those of last year, they are still not enough to keep everycne working on a full-time basis. We are urging the community to help eliminate this immediate and urgent normal seasonal shortage of work for the handicapped. Please look around your homes and see if there is something you would like to donate to Goodwill. It will certainly help the handi- capped help themselves. If there is not a Goodwill collection box in your nearby area, please call 394-0647 to arrange for a home pick-up to be scheduled.
