The bride-elect is a 1978 graduate of Donegal High Donegal school district in Educational Quality On February 26 of this school year, Donegal will be partici~ating in the Educa- tional f)uality Assessment (EQA) program adminis- tered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The EQA program is provided as a service to the school district. Donegal volunteered for the program to get information for future decision-making. Students’ performance on Pennsylvania’s Goals of Qnality Education serve as the basis for the statewide assessment and presently include 14 areas: Self- Esteem, Understanding Others, Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Interest in School and Learning, Soci- etal Responsibility, Know- ledge of Law/Government; Health and Safety Practices. Creative Activities, Caree: Awareness, Appreciating Human Accomplishments, Knowledge of Human Ac- complishments, and Infor- mation Usage. Donegal is one of over 150 school districts which has volunteered for the assess- ment this year and 1,100 plus schools will receive their EQA results next fall. Along with those from Donegal, about 150,000 Sth, 8th and 11th grade students throughout the Common- wealth will be completing EQA questionnaires. The assessment is not a device to attempt to stan- dardize the curriculum. It gives schools information about what their students know and feel, their teach- ers’ perception of the school, and how these scores compare to those in schools throughout the Commonwealth. The key word is information-value judgments are left to the local school officials. More specifically, the survey con- siders the interests, values, habits, knowledge and basic cognitive skills thought to be important in the develop- ment of our children. Students do not put their names on their answer sheets so there is no record of how any individual School and is employed as a receptionist at the Union National Mount Joy Bank. Such hard data are necessary to combat the folklore and testimonial aspect of the usual asurances that one has a good school.
