The Halbleibs, while doing many things together, also encourage their child- ren, especially older Alison, to do things on their own too. As teachers, they are aware of the pitfalls of too much dependence on par- ents. Although they have stud- ied plenty of educational theory, the Halbleibs don’t have a carefully worked out set of principles for child- rearing. ‘‘We try to trust each other,”” says Dave. ‘““The children know they can depend on us.
