A group camped out near TMI in 1844 to await the end of the world. It was all started by one William Miller of New York, who in 1831 decided that the world would end in 1844, basing his estimate on scripture. Miller came to our area and soon had a band of followers, centered around Goldsboro and Middletown. They all expected the world to end between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844. When March of 1844 approached without doom, Miller decided he had been confusing the Jewish and Roman calendars, and revised the end of the world date upward by one day: March 22, 1844. The Millerites, wearing muslin robes, assembled on Hill Island near TMI Most of them had given away all their property, and one had asked his lawyer to forgive a debt, since the world was about to end. The lawyer had replied that the debt would be forgiven if the world did indeed end. It seems the Millerites picked an island to wait for the end because they expected to walk on water. Miller had predicted that Gabriel’s horn would sound at 3:00 AM that night. A praticaal joker named Sam Patch climbed a tree near the Millerites’ encampment, and at the appointed hour blew a snail’s horn at them, causing temporary excite- ment. When the sun rose on the 23rd, the Millerites went home. Miller wrote from New York: ““...I still believe the day of the Lord is near... be watchful, and let not that come upon you unawares.’ - Private .
