They gave me a golf bag, a ‘‘Butter’’ putter, jacket, cap, a wheel barrow full of rocks from the ball diamond, a host of cards and letters, and all sorts of testimonials from former sports officials, opposing coaches, present coaches, administrators, and others who worked with me. All of the nice things they said to me I will treasure forever. Most of all I would like them to know I am only retiring, not quitting. Secondly, it should have been me thanking and praising them for all the wonderful memories they have allowed me to accumulate. Many of them remem- bered the ‘‘Ten Command- ments of Sports’ 1 gave to them and coached by. I want all of them to know that these were given to me by my high school coach, Mr. Al Hedelt, from Pleasant- . ville, New Jersey. If my . influences on my ‘‘kids”’ were as great as Coach Hedelt’s were on me, I must be eternally grateful. I am Left to right [with their respective mothers] are Ryan Sload, Ben Carroll, Nicole Hess and Tara Gillham Hess and Carroll are King and Queen of the Fair Nicole Hess and Ben Carroll were crowned Queen and King of the annual Children’s Fair, held Satur- day at Marietta War Memorial Park. All seventeen candidates for King and Queen of the Fair received gifts from the sponsoring organization, the Marietta Recreation Associ- ation. Donna Loucks and Lynn Gohn were general chairpersons for the event. not sure, but I think the Letter to the Editor: Yes, Midget Baseball is dying in Marietta. It no longer belongs to all the boys and girls it was intended for. Once again adults have taken the fun out of the great American past time—Baseball. To become a member of the MYAA traveling midget team, a child must attend try-outs. If chosen for the team, he must remain there. He may not go back down to pee-wees for any reason, even if the reason is because he is a bench warmer and wants desperately to play baseball and not just watch it from the side lines. Every youngster on that team should be of equal talent (since they were all hand picked) and should get an equal amount of playing time. Not Se! There are the same 9 boys who play regularly (good or bad) and author of the ‘Ten Commandments of Sports’ was Grantland Rice. Some of these former ““kids’’, Dick Boyd, Ben Brown, Asher Neiss and Lee Hess, have gone on to play for the ‘““Coach in Heaven’’ as well as one of my former ‘‘opposing coaches’’, Don Staley, for whom I have always had the greatest respect and admiration. Yes, thirty three years seems like a long time when it is ahead of you, but when it is behind you, it seems like only yesterday. I only wish I could relive all the wonderful experiences I have had as a coach, teacher and guidance counselor. It has been my pleasure to brag about those who have gone on to become success- ful in their chosen fields of medicine, law, farming, business, teaching, armed forces, politics, public service, nuclear science, professional athletes, just to name a few of their chosen areas of endeavor, and some are still helping kids thru athletics the way I hope 1 did. On Thursday 1 was presented with a beautiful pocket watch by the Student Council of Donegal High MYAAa “clique” the other five sit on the bench getting to play only when the coach feels like playing them. I honestly believe the only reason these 5 boys were chosen was to fill the roster. The reason for all the favoritism in this organiza- tion is because the MYAA is run by a clique. If you happen to be a close friend or relative of the clique your child will play ball. As you have probably guessed by now, my family is neither and proud of it. There are just some things I refuse to lower my standards for and this clique is one of them. This same clique helps run the Donegal Braves Midget Football Program. My son sat on the bench 2 straight years for a team that never won a game, yet he was made to feel he wasn’t good enough to play! When my husband ap- school on behalf of the students. Mrs. Ruth Gantos and Mr. H. Martin Shenk were also presented with similar watches by the same group. The coaches presented me with a plaque inscribed to ‘““Coach, Teacher, Coun- selor and Friend.”” These expressions of thanks are deeply appreciated and will be cherished along with my memories of both groups. Also, at this same assembly I was presented with a plaque from the Army Northeast Regional Recrui- ting command for services rendered to the Army Recruiters in the area. Really, all 1 have ever done was to assist boys and girls become aware of the opportunities offered by the military, as well as some of the obligations we have to protect and defend our wonderful country against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Not every person need bear arms to aid in this “Mission of the Armed Forces.”’ Thanks again for the opportunities all of these groups have given me in fulfilling my lifelong ambi- tions. Thanks. John D. Day 3rd “Chuck” “Mr. Day”’ “Coach” “Lt. Col. USAF Ret.” proached the MYAA and told them that our son, Mike, wanted to quit, they never took a minute of time to ask Mike, why? They did however, find the time to ask for the return of the uniform. This is not the first incident of a boy being deprived of the privilege to play ball on that team. If these kids aren’t good enough for the team they should never have been chosen. They all paid $3.00 to play baseball. I feel this letter must be written because of all the people who support MYAA under the false pretense that all kids get the same chance at MYAA. The MYAA should have a more loving and compas- sionate way with children!! . Thanks MYAA, for mak- ing my son a quitter.
