CBC youth organize to help needy This summer the Congre- gational Bible Church will organize a group of ener- getic youths in Marietta, from the ages of 12 to 18, to help needy individuals in Marietta on a voluntary basis. This program is part of the Marietta Youth Ministry under the leader- ship of Gary Newton and five full-time young adult counselors. Other activities involved in the summer program are two weeks of vacation Bible School, two weeks of camp, day camp, backpacking trips, canoeing trips, bike hikes, Bible studies and other forms of recreation. The service projects are designed. to provide a balance in the program by not only ‘‘giving to the youth’ but training them to give unselfishly to others. If you know of any elderly, handicapped or needy indi- vidual who needs help— mowing grass, painting, pulling weeds, cleaning yards, cleaning house, washing windows, etc. —contact Gary Newton. Any youth interested in doing something constructive this summer is also encouraged to contact Gary at 426-2514 or 426-1345. The following young people will be supported by the Congregational Bible Church this summer as they work with youths in Mari- etta. Larry Wilkinson: Larry is 26 years old, a welder by trade and an outdoorsman by nature. This year he has studied part-time at LBC and has led the Thursday night Youth Center. This will be his second summer as a counselor with the Congregational Bible Church. Mike Daugherty: Mike is 21 years old, finishing his second year at LBC. This past year he led the Saturday night Youth Cen- ter. Mike has experience in wilderness camping, canoe- ing and youth work. Thomas H. Asplin honored by Naval Reserve Thomas H. Asplin, teach- er of industrial arts (metals), at Donegal High School, has been selected as Naval Enlisted Reservist of the Year for the Fourth Naval District, which includes New Jersey, New York, Mary- land, and parts of Virginia, in addition to Pennsylvania. Asplin will now be consider- ed for nationwide honors. He won this recognition for his outstanding success in recruiting young men for the Navy. Letters of recommenda- tion written by fellow teachers John Day, John ® — Thomas H. Asplin Don Lamb: Don is 18, a graduate of E-town High School. He is considering art school in the fall. This past year Don has helped to lead the Wednesday Youth Group (junior high). This will be Don's second year as a counselor. Nancy Long: Nancy is 22 years old, finishing her fourth year at LBC. She has worked this year at the Saturday nigh Youth Center and has experience in horse- back riding, backpacking and canoeing. Susan Snyder: Susan, 19, is finishing her second year at LBC. She has worked in both the Saturday night Youth Center and as a teacher in various church ministries. W.W. Loose, and Mimi Peraro helped Asplin to win the award. During the summers he works as a naval recruiter stationed in Lancaster and visits every high school in the county. Asplin believes whole- heartedly in the worthwhile- ness of the training offered by the Navy. Asplin, who holds a master’s degree from Mil- lersville State College, lives in Lancaster with his wife. Carol and daughters Jennie and Julie.
