June 6, 1979 Strawberry Festival at Haldeman Mansion in Bainbridge The annual Stawberry Festival, sponsored by the Haldeman Mansion Preser- vation Society, will be-held rain or shine, on the grounds of the historic Haldeman Mansion, Sunday June 10th, 2:00 to 7:00 PM. The mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historia Places, is located one-half mile south of Bain- bridge, off Route 441. Strawberries, ice cream and shortcake are featured with additional foods avail- able for a light supper, all prepared by society mem- bers. Tickets may be pur- chased the day of the event. Ample parking is available free on the property grounds. Entertainment through- out the afternoon will be provided by Zimmy Schmidt's German Band. Also featured is a visit from “Freckles’’ the clown, por- trayed by society member Nelda Bair. She will give away free balloons to all children and carry a basket filled with “‘penny’’ candy which may be purchased. The society will offer for sale newly issued note paper which depicts the mansion, sketched by Keeler Chap- man. In addition, pen and ink art prints of the mansion, suitable for fram- ing, will be personally auto- graphed by the artist, Linda Hayden Wilson. An added attraction is an exhibit which displays photographic copies of original property surveys and pictures of the mansion in former years, plus a photographed portrait of S.S. Haldeman, all of which were on display for the first time to the public at the celebration of Lancas- ter’'s 250th Anniversary at Lancaster County Central Park. A new feature at this year's event is a plant and odds and ends table. As usual, the mansion and outbuilding will be open for inspection free of charge. The 18th Century stone mansion is the birthplace of Professor Samuel Steman Haldeman (1812-1880), a distinguished scientist and leading authority on natural history, ethnology, philo- logy, and phonology. Event chairman is Mrs. Thelma V. Bair. All pro- ceeds will benefit the society’s on-going restora- tion of the property and the establishment of a Halde- man Library and Museum in a room of the main house. The organization actively seeks new members, and applications for membership will be available during the festival. For any further information, Mrs. Bair may be contacted at 426-3266, or Marguaretta Gingrich may be called at 426-3403. —Nelda D.
