we RARE 5 April 25, 1979 .. School Board Mr. Hallgren said that the schools had tried to maintain normal operation in spite of the excitement caused by the media and anti-nuke protesters. On Friday, March 30, the schools followed the Civil Defense instructions to keep everyone inside and turn off the fans, which created a very stuffy environment, he said. Noting that they were told to prepare buses for evacuating the students and others (including pets), he said they were told to drive everyone to Lebanon, where, he later learned, no one would have been because they would have already evacuated them- selves. ‘‘The instructions were mighty poor,”” he said. The new discipline code was not acted on at the meeting because the DHS student council had not sent in their appraisal yet. It will be voted on next month. Shop supplies and paper bids were accepted. A monetary dispute with the Way Oil Co. was discussed. Mr. Sites told the board that he had asked for a settlement from the company, and had been promised a letter which never arrived. ‘‘I give up,” Sites said. The board decided to withhold payment for a while to ‘‘get someone’s attention’’ at Way Oil, as one board member put it. About $20,000 is involved. The leaking roof at DHS was also discussed, again. The Heidler Co. still denies any responsibility, and the board is still holding $3000 of their bill back. Board president Arnold noted, ‘“‘We can’t sue the architect and we can't collect from the roofer.’” He advised closer inspection of work-in-progress done by contractors. The tennis court lights issue was finally resolved. DHS principal Drenner was authorized to buy timing switches to cut the lights off an hour after they are turned on. With the set-up installed, the Board hopes to get some local organiza- tion to foot the $1.20/hour electric bill. Converting the DHS track to metric specification was settled. It will cost $17,036. Letter from DHS student Kristen Straub, a member of the national honor society, was read to the board. Ms. Straub asked them to buy 18 label pins for the society members, at $3 each. She noted the amount of money spent on sports, and stated that academic matters prepare one better for ‘‘life.” The purchase was ap- proved. Bids totalling $58,720 were accepted for work on the DHS shop roof, auditorium roof, and cafe- teria roof. The auditorium will be insulated at the same time. The company that won the bids was J.M. Young & Sons, Inc., of Belleville. By buying a ‘package’ deal, the board saved some money. The other two companies also offered package deals, but their bids were substantially higher all around. Dr. Hartzler congratulat- ed the DHS science depart- ment and students for their excellent showing at the county Science Fair. Dr. Fellenbaum congrat- ulated the cast of Bye Bye Birdie and proposed Gene Funk and Bill Earhart as coaches for next year, in the same positions. The recommendation was ac- cepted. Mrs. Eicherly reported at length on the Lancaster County Tax Collection Bureau proceedings.
