Bell services the reactor island itself, while United provides phones to the observation center, which has been the head- quarters of Met Ed, the NRC, and the news media since the accident started. Within five days of the initial problems on March 28th, United Tel’s service to the observation center had grown from two phone circuits to 137. Four lines were installed on March 28th; on the 29th there were 1S United Tel working, on a volunteer , basis, nearly 24 hours a day; by Friday night there were more than 20 lines in service. 8000 feet of cable were laid there on Sunday. With the cooperation of AT&T, United provided lines to Harrisburg, Wash- ington, and other cities. More special arrange- ments had to be made for president Carter’s visit. In addition to this, regular phone users placed up to three times the normal number of calls, and United Tel was also busy helping to set up evacuation plans, buying radiation clothing and respirators for employ- ees who volunteered to stay during the evacuation, and making emergency plans to relocate company headquar- ters in Chambersburg. ree installers SRR SE SE Ca
