March 7, 1979 Obituaries JOHN M. BOWMAN John M. Bowman, 86, formerly of Mount Joy, died last week at the Whitehall Convalescent Centre. He had lived there for seven years. He was a retired pharm- aceutical and drug sales- man for Lederle L.bora- tories. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Joy, the American Legion Post #185, and the Friendship Fire Company. A veteran of World War One, he served withe the 24th Aero Squadron. Neffsville; and Esther Hartman, Cincin- nati. MRS. GUY HOFFMAN Grace Smith Hoffman, 78, of RDI1 Bainbridge, died last week at her home after a long illness. She was the widow of Guy S. Hoffman, who died in April of 1976. Mrs. Hoffman was the former social editor of the Lancaster Journal, and was a county correspondent for the Lan- caster Newspapers for several years. She also conducted a ballet school. She was a member of the Lancaster Junior League, and the English United’ Presbyterian Church of Marietta. She was born in Lancas- ter, a daughter of the late Dr. Sherman and Zenaida Smith. She is survived by one niece and several nephews, including Daniel A. Schadt and Thomas E. Schadt, Jr., both of Marietta RD1. ELMER J. MURPHY, JR. Elmer J. Murphy, Jr. 26, of Rheems, died at his home last week after a brief illness. He had been under the care of a physician. He was the husband of Bonita J. Ritter Murphy. Murphy was employed as a stonechrusher operator in Union Quarries, Rheems. He was a member of the Rheems Fire Company, where he served as first assistant fire chief, and the Rheems Fire Company baseball team. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of Elmer J., Sr., and Effie Boyd Murphy of Rheems. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Beth Ann and Rena Michel Murphy, both at home; a brother, Steven R. Murphy; a sister, Tammy J. Murphy, Rheems; a sister, Tina Marie Murphy, Rheems; a maternal grand- mother, Evelyn G. Boyd, of Mount Joy; and a paternal grandmother, Catherine Murphy Brobst, of Eliza- bethtown. MRS. WILLIAM SMITH Mrs. Ruth C. Smith, 86, of RD3 Mount Joy, Pinkerton Road, died last week at Lancaster General Hospital. She had been a patient there for two weeks. She was the wife of William R. Smith, who died in 1962. She was born in Bain- bridge, a daughter of the late John and Gertrude Ferryman Wile. Intelligencer - She was a member of the Haldeman Society of Bain- bridge and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Bain- bridge. She belonged to the church for more than 70 years. She lived in Bain- bridge for 79 years before moving to Mount Joy. Surviving her are a son, Elwood S., Bainbridge; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Wile, of Bainbridge. JOSEPH WOLGEMUTH Joseph M. Wolgemuth, Sr., 79, of Mount Joy RDI, died last week at St. Joseph Hospital, unexpect- edly. He was the husband of Edna Strickler Wolgemuth. He was a son of the late Hiram E. and Martha _ Musser Wolgemuth. He was a retired farmer. Wolgemuth belonged to the Cross Roads Brethren in Christ Church and the Mount Joy Leisure Club. Surviving him, besides his wife, are: four son and two daughters: Wilbur M., Philadelphia; Joseph M. Jr., Mount Joy RD3; Robert M., Mount Joy RD1; Martha, the wife of Lloyd Myers, Elizabeth- town; Catherine, the wife of Jay Heisey, Rexville, NY; and Ernest M., Mount Joy. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, and five brothers: Daniel M., Irvin M., Eli M., Abner M., and J. Musser, all of Mount Joy; and a sister, Martha, the wife of Clarence Lyons, Lancaster. LESTER Z. ZUCH Lester S. Zuch, 76, of 678 East Market Street, Marietta, died last week at home after an illness of two years. He was the husband of Helen B. Landis Zuch. A retired mutual fund salesman for Channing Co. of Lancaster, he had previously operated a res- taurant in Marietta. The restaurant was open for 30 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Marietta, and Ashara Lodge 398, Free and Accepted Masons. Born in Marietta, he was a son of the late George and Annie Koehler Zuch. Besides his wife, he is survived by: a son, Samuel G. Zuch, Marietta; three daughters, Rebecca A., the wife of Paul E. Yecker, and Joanne, the wife of L. Eugene Cope, both of Lancaster; and Christine E., the wife of David M. Rosser III of Maytown; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a sister, Effie Kise, Marietta; and two brothers, Paul E. Zuch, Citrus Heights, CA, and Karl Zuch, Winter Haven, Florida.
