February 7, 1979 J ohn Day and Kristen Straub are Boy and Girl of the Month “John Day John David Day, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John. D. Day 3rd, 20S Park Avenue, Mount Joy, is the Boy of the Month for February at Donegal High School. John, who plans to attend Stroudsburg State College to study computers -science, has worked for the Sico Company and attends Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Joy. He is also an active scout: a junior assistantmaster Eagle Scout, he is an Explorer scout, a member of the Order of the Arrow, and a member of the National Eagle Scout Association. He attended the 1977 National Scout Jamboree. His activities at DHS have included: Marching band 9-12 Concert band 9-12 Chess club 9 Spanish club 10 junior class play Drama club 11 Spanish Honor Society National Honor Soc. 11,12 senior class play Science Fair club 12 Keystone Boys’ State 2nd place, physics, DHS Science Fair Marine Technology Society engineering award for outstanding achievemnt Who's Who Kristen Straub Adult evening courses at DHS The following courses are being offered at Donegal High School during the winter/spring semester. Fly-Tying: Instructor Mr. Kenneth Depoe — This course will accommodate the beginner and advanced fly-tying fisherman. The course will include tying nymphs, wet flies, and dry flied. Methods and mater- ials will be emphasized. The course is open to all ages. The course will begin in mid-February and con- tinue on a two session per week for ten weeks. The cost of the course is $10.00. English Grammar and Word Study: Miss Catha- rine Zeller will teach the course. The course will cover a ten week period, starting in mid-February on Monday evening from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Anyone interested in improving his oral or written communica- tion should register at the high school. The cost of the course will be based on enrollment. A minimum fee of $15.00 with an enroll- ment of fifteen students is necessary to initiate the course. Two courses are being offered by Mr. William Loercher: They are Intro- duction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis and Introduction to Electronics. Registration is open to students and adults for the Pack 53 activities . The Maytown Cub Scout Pack #53 held their January 29 Pack meeting at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Maytown, the pack spon- sor. Cubmaster Ron Mul- lens presided over a multi-faceted monthly gathering chock full of presentations, acknow- ledgements, and the excit- ing Pine-Wood Derby. Den 1, led by den “mother Darlene Williams, was in charge of the opening ceremony. Pack chairman Don Ruth made the following announcements: February 4, Boy Scout Sunday will be observed by the attendance of the pack at the 10:30 AM service at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Maytowny Feb- ruary 7, Pack Committee meeting at 7:00 PM at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building at which time plans will be formalized for the February 23 Blue and Gold Banquet. Acknowledgement given and scout canteens were awarded to Harold Mohr, Den 1, Mike Palmer, Den 2, and Jesse Shank, Webelos, for super sales- manship for the French Chocolate Mint project by chairman, Bernie Donley. Advancement of rank and recognition for the scouts’ badge work was awarded to the following: den 1, receiving wolf badges, Erik Williams, Steven McNaughton, and Bobby Arnette, Den 2, receiving wolf badges, Hobb Wilson, Donny Ruth, Robert Bote, Webelos leader, Bernie Donley, presented his scouts with the Webelos badge and badge colors upon which were pinned the earned activity badges. These Webelos and the completed activities are as follows: J. Edward Gilmartin, Aqua- naut, Artist, Athlete, craftsman, Naturalist; Jesse Shank, Artist, Ath- lete, Craftsman, Geologist; Lee Wise, Artist, Crafts- man, Traveler; Scott Wil- liams, Aquanaut, Athlete, Craftsman, Naturalist; Stuart Newman, Aquanaut, Athlete, Craftsman, Traveler; Ronald Smith, Artist, Aquanaut, Crafts- man. Also completing We- belos Craftsman badges were Keith » Decker and Steven Herr. Mr. Donley fee of $20.00. The courses will be offered from 7:00 to 9:00 PM for a ten week period beginning February 12. An adult wood class will be taught by Mr. Barry McFarland. The course will be open to students and adults. The course will begin in February and the length of the course and time of class will be established by the instruc- tor when the students first meet. The course fee will be based on enrollment. Den 2, led by den mother, Jeannette Ruth, signaled the beginning of the ‘‘Derby’’ races by a special scout rendition of the ‘‘Pinewood Derby Races.”” Anxiety reigned supreme from the official weigh-in to the final “‘race-off.”’ Those securing official derby status are: Semi-final winners Andrew Trostle, Den 1, Steven Thomas, Den 2, and Keith Decker, Webelos. The grand champion of the pack was Steven Thomas. The most original design was awarded to J. Edward Gilmartin. The judges for the event were Mr. William Vogel and Mr. Dale Allen Boyer. The closing ceremony was conducted by Den 2. Submitted by Pat Gilmartin Publicity Chairwoman Kristen A. Straub is Donegal High's Girl of the Month for February. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Straub of 116 South Market Street, Mount Joy. Kristen was a Miss National Teenager State finalist recently. She parti- cipated in the V.F.W. Voice of Democracy Essay Contest, and won 1st place in the school and 3rd in the county. She has worked at the Hershey Park Amphi- theater as a show hostess.
