He had them make up not the usual two dimensional maps, but three dimensional ones—in effect, models. When the kids merely drew plans for houses, they tended to leave out the bathrooms, forget to put in stairs, and the like. But when they got ready to make actual miniature houses, the problems be- came more concrete. More thought was put into the models. Working in small groups, the kids first drew rough plans, then detailed plans. Then, using such diverse building materials as sugar cubes, popsicle sticks, and heavy paper, they began building. Off- the- drawing- board problems arose and were solved: the original con- struction of the sugar cube house melted when the students tried to weld them together with water. After experimenting with glues, they hit on a sound method. With 3-D shells com- pleted, they kids went on to hang tiny curtains and build furniture. And they included the bathrooms that had been left out of some plans. This hands-on approach to map study gives Mr. Konas’ students practical experience as well as theoretical know-how. ‘ ¥ XR le February 7, 1979 ‘Mike Brubaker and Amy Hess at work on a popsicle-stick ranch house.
