Obviously not all old houses are designed alike, so when restoring or renovating your old house, you should consider what the architect’s intent was when he designed the building. Even if you're not doing an authentic restoration, try to capture some of the general flavor of the style or period in which your built. Many people nowadays manage to blend contemporary conveniences and furnish- ings into the decor of an old house without losing the charm and individuality of the original house design. This is done by leaving intact the architec- tural details not found in most modern houses and working the furnishings around them. These details include such features as original mouldings around doors and windows, chair rails, external sawn wood ornaments, original or reproductions of original hardware, glass transoms, etc. These are all features that give the house individuality and are not normally as well made today. When determining the style of your house there are a few general items to keep in mind. There are many types of old houses in our area and it would take an expert to identify all of them, but they can generally be placed into two categories: pre-1850 and post-1850 or Victorian. First let’s look at the pre-1850 house. This cate- gory includes styles such as Colonial, Colonial saltbox, Georgian, Federal and Greek revival to name a few. The important thing to remember about the pre- 1850 house is that because much of it was hand- crafted, its design was generally functional. The average house did not include a lot of ornamental extras that the later Victorian house had. The basic shape of most pre-1850 houses is very 1 L\ TTR 07) inupey 8 - i FT | 22 \ / } = J ALT I Li i =m LLL TT The] 7 I) Victorian ‘““boxy’’ and often symetri- cal. Windows are divided into small panes, often six over six or nine over six. A porch on this type of house is probably a later addition. Chimneys are often an obvious part of the design. Floor boards are wider and many were finished natur- ally. Our country was young during this time and the eagle was proudly dis- played in many ways but it was never found on th exterior of the later Victorian house. Houses built from about 1850 to 1910 are called Victorian. There are many’ types of Victorians in this area but they all have certain features in common. Products of the industrial revolution, they symbolize a new age of prosperity and techno- logical advancement. You can see this influence in their larger size, irregular asymmetrical shape, and proliferation of all sorts of fancy wooden trim. The basic design idea of that time was to flaunt our new technology and wealth with such features as stained glass windows, intricate sawn wood trim (ginger- bread), wooden turnings, cast iron fences, ‘‘fish- scale’ wood patterns on gables, and extra amenities such as large front porches. Few Victorian houses are alike in detail and this is part of their charm. They vary in the amount they have, depending on the wealth and tastes of the original owner, but mass production of trim made at least a little ‘‘fanciness’’ within the financial reach of almost everyone. The main point to keep in mind when restoring a Victorian house is that the Victorians took pride in the refined, intricate detail our industrial craftsmen were able to produce. ‘‘Crude- ness’’ or ‘‘Rusticness’’ were not ‘‘in.”” Rough barn siding or exposed beams would have been consider- ed a disgrace, not a repre- sentation of fine craftsman- ship. In summary, then: al- though the eclectic look is fashionable in interior furn- ishings, it is difficult to successfully mix periods when restoring your house. It’s best to determine the original intent of the builder and not destroy any detail that contributes toward the desired effect of a given style. If you are careful you will not only preserve a bit of your heritage but also the aesthetic and financial value of your old house. Pre-1850
