A few minutes after Lehman had scored the first Elco touchdown with a brilliant catch, he managed to intercept a Brian Ney pass. The Indians, who had seen Ney intercepted only twice this season, before Saturday, stared in amazement as Lehman rambled 40 yards to the TODDLERS’ REG. $2.79 REG. 5.98 HOODED SHIRT dd Easy-care cotton. MOUNT JOY, PA Pete Splain launches a punt. goal line with the stolen football. A two-point conversion followed, and Elco led 15-14 at the half. Ney was intercepted twice by the fleet-footed Raiders. After a while, he stopped trying to throw the ball, and began running with it instead, with dev- astating results for the Raiders. Splain, Mummau, Jones and Ney bulled the football up the field a few yards at a time, and Elco was unable to stop them in the third period. Splain and Mummau both scored in the second half, and Mummau duplicated Leh- man’s feat by intercepting a pass at mid-field and running it back to the Elco two; but that big play was canceled by a penalty. Elco retaliated with a sporadically effective aerial attack, which gave them another goal in the last quarter and closed the scoring gap. The game was still up for grabs when Elco launched a series of desperation passes in the final minutes. The Raider quarterback was sacked a few times, but he completed a couple of monster passes, and put his team frighteningly close to the Indian goal line with 17 seconds left to play. Then Steve Meszaros deflected an attempted pass. The ball dropped short, but an alert Scott Adams corraled it before it hit the ground. Happy Indians smothered Adams with congratulations, and the clock ran out on a perfect season for Donegal. Victory screams echoed in the Indian locker room for at least ten minutes. Later, when the team returned to Mount Joy in the late-autumn dusk, the school band and an ecstatic crowd were waiting with a hero's welcome for the new champions. Arlen Mummau shoves aside an Elco defender. Coach Deshler expects to have a winning football team next year. The junior varsity looked good in the second half of the season, and although almost all of this year’s starters will vanish with graduation, their understudies have probably learned a lot in scrimmages against the first string. ““When you play with the best, it's got to help,” coach Deshler observes. ““The kid who had to block Bill Lambert every day during practice may not have enjoyed it, but when he comes up against anybody else, it’s going to seem like a piece of cake.’ STATISTICS: The Indians gave up 3 fumbles and two intercep- tions, which explains why the game was so close. Statistics for the .defense and the unsung heroes of the line have not yet been compiled as we go to press (we'll have them next November 15, 1978 week) but here is what the glory-boys did: Pete Splain picked up 107 yards on 22 carries against Elco. For the year, Pete ran 147 times for 954 yards and a 6.5 yards-per- carry average. (If he hadn't sat out two games because of injuries, he would have easily rushed well over 1000 yards). Arlen Mummau picked up 69 yards on 15 carries against the Raiders. For the year, Mummau has 754 yards on 123 carries for a 6.2 yard average. Scott Jones went 34 yards on 10 carries last Saturday. For the year, Jones has 427 yards on 76 carries. Brian Ney ran 63 yards on 6 carries against Elco. (He would have been a great halfback if he didn’t know how to pass). For the year, his rushing stats are unimpressive—135 yards on 38 carries—but sacks are subtracted from a quarterback’s rushing statistics. : In the passing depart- ment, Ney gained 70 yards against Elco. He completed half of his ten passes, but was intercepted twice. For the year, he hurled 90 times, connected 57 times, ‘and was intercepted only 4 times. His arm netted the team 923 yards—an average of 11.1 yards per toss. Although he was shut out by Lehman last Satur- day, Frank Brommer grabbed 11 big passes over the season to net the team 282 yards. Scott Adams caught one 14-yard pass against Elco. For the year, he has pulled in 1S passes for 187 yards. Splain [again—he turns up everywhere] caught 4 passes against Elco for 56 yards. For the year, he caught 9 mostly short ones for 123 yards. Splain also led tHe league in scoring with 14 touchdowns, 36 extra points, and two field goals. (That’s 126 points, folks).
