July 19, 1978 SUSQUEHANNA TIMES—Page $ Fire Crew plans Woodsmen’s Festival The Elizabethtown, Mt. Joy Forest Fire Crew's second annual Woodsmen’s Festival will be held on Thursday, Friday, and Sat- urday, September 7, 8, &9. Activities will begin at 6:00 PM on Thursday, Friday and at noon on Saturday. As of last year, the carnival and Woodsmen’s Festival will be held on the grounds of the crew’s Forest Fire Station on Green Tree Road in Mount joy Township. Rain dates will be Sept- ember 14, 15, &16. The public is invited to attend and participate. Game stands and individual and team competition is open to everyone. Tobacco spitting contest will be featured if enough interest is shown. If the state record is broken, the record will be entered in the standing record with the travel development Bureau in Harrisburg. Contestants may enter the day of the competition. Each contest- ant will spit at an 18 inch fired pot bellied stove starting at a distance of 6 feet from the stove. $500 in prize money will be given away for the following competition: Two- man cross cut sawing, modified chain sawing, axe chopping, axe throwing. Playground Playground continued this week with an average attendance of S0 children. The week culminated Fri- day with the judging of a coloring contest. The winn- ners of the primary cate- gory were: 1st prize, Kelly Neel; 2nd prize, Holly Shaeffner; 3rd prize, Bryan Embly. The winners of the secondary category were: Ist prize, Lynn Lesnefsky; 2nd prize, Kevin Barnhart; 3rd prize, Janelle Lesnef- sky. All other entrants in the contest received ‘‘hon- orable mention’ awards for their efforts. Also featured will be man, woman cross cut sawing, ungreased pole climbing, log joisting using padded poles, log rolling and log cutting, tug-of-War (S-man team), women’s nail driv- ing. The competition will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 9. Competitiors will be present from Conn- ecticut, New York State, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. There will be plenty of rides for children and the food concession will be handled by the Ladies Auxiliary with chicken corn soup and many other goodies to eat. Exhibits featuring trap- ping, archery, camping, chain saws, lawn and garden equipment, hand made dolls, wood crafts, black powder and muzzle reloading, wood burning stoves, also displays by the Bureau of Forestry, Turkey Federation, and Pa. Fish Commission. Colored T-shirts depict- ing the Woodsmen'’s festi- val will also be on sale. Square dancing (Red Taylor and the Toppers) will be held on Friday evening and Zaturday evening will be Shorty Long and The Sante Fe Rangers. One of the main features of News Coming events for the week of July 17-21 are: “Disco Day’’ on Monday morning, swimming on Tuesday morning(permis- sion slips, please), Pet Show on Tuesday after- noon, a Nok Hockey tourn- ament for boys and a checkers tournament for girls on Wednesday, a bingo game for all on Thursday morning, a bike rodeo on Thursday after- noon, and a clay modeliing contest on Friday. Just a reminder — swimming lessons begin on Thursday, July 20. Ted Hershey on the dean’s list Ted Hershey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Her- shey of 43 Springville Road, Mount Joy, made the dean’s list at Point Park College in Pittsburgh, where he is a dance major. Ted is a 1976 DHS grad.
