1976 TS: August 4, 1976 heart attack first [continued from Page 1] Larry Warfel, an Emer- gency Medical Technician who responds to ambulance calls, said that CPR is used in about 40% of all emer- gencies he deals with. The trouble is, CPR should be started immedi- ately. A person is often dead by the time the ambulance arrives. ‘‘The more people who know CPR, the more lives will be saved,’’ Larry told us. The course started with a 30 minute film which ex- plained basic CPR. Follow- ing the film, a short lecture was delivered by Steve Hummer and Dan Baum, Penn State students who had come to Maytown for the occasion. Rose Barr and her daughter Pat Reidy, both of Maytown, then practiced CPR on manikins specially designed for the purpose, called ‘“‘Resusci-Anne’s (‘‘Resusci-Andy’’ didn’t make it). Dan and Steve helped them perfect their technique. The course was organiz- aid course [— = er ed by Mike Kanoff. Mani- kins and booklets were supplied by the Red Cross, and Steve and Dan volun- teered their time. The Susquehanna Times hopes that the fire com- pany is not so discouraged by the meager attendance that they will not give another course soon...and that if they do, more people will take advantage of this excellent opportun- ity to possibly save a life. United Way of Lanc. Co. names nine division chairpersons for ’76 United Way of Lancaster County today announced the appointment of nine volunteers from the com- munity to fill top-level posts as division chairper- sons in the 1976 campaign organization. Each represents a differ- ent trade classification, such as Industry and Con- struction, Manufacturing or Finance. The division chairpersons are the in- dividuals actually in charge of raising the money. They are a step down from the campaign chairman in the organization and report directly to him. They are: William A. Mehler, Harold S. Evans, Robert Garner, Clifford M. Schmid Edgar Grove, Sally Brene- man, Dr. Duane C. Gold- man, Fred R. Bahrenburg, Gladys McMurtrie. The division chairpersons McMurtrie said, are spend- ing their time now through the campaign (Sept. 7 - Nov. 18) in four major New items areas of responsibility: management, recruitment, and training, organization and planning and follow- up. ‘“As a manager,”” he said, ‘‘the division chair- person must be the primary motivator and decisionmak- er for those under him in the hierarchy. As a re- cruiter and trainer, he is responsible for bringing his volunteer campaign work- ers on board, some half- dozen section chairpersons in each division, and seeing that they understand their responsibilities.” Section chairpersons are responsible for a group of related firms within the trade group division, such as Retailers and Whole- salers, Utilities Communi- cations in the Commerce and Transportation Division McMurtrie said. He added that the section chairper- sons are in turn responsible for recruiting and training as many as 1S volunteer account executives who will make United Way’s initial contact with every business or firm in the county to set-up in-house campaigns. Finally, he said, the division chairpersons will follow-up on each account until the drive is completed in late November. Over all, there are some 5,000 volunteers in United Way’s campaign structure, including a solicitor for every 10 employees. “The chief advantages of this organization approach,” McMurtrie said *‘are that it is efficient and extremely inexpensive. By relying entirely on volun- teers, the only expense we incur is for supplies. As a result, United Way's nominal fund-raising cost of 5.2% of the total cam- paign receipts is the lowest in the nation. ‘““We are counting on our organization this year to be instrumental in reaching the ambitious $2.1 million goal we've set, which is absolutely critical to the survival of our 38 human service agencies.”’ on agenda for Aug.9th Mt.
