Page 14 - SUSQUEHANNA TIMES Letter to editor Dear Editor, In the June 30th edition of your paper, The Susque- hanna Times, you noted (on page 6) that you have no knowledge of who wrote the Indian Legend related there. The story may be found in Chapter LXVIII, Mount Joy Township, History of Lancaster County, PA. The history was published in 1883 by Franklin Ellis and Samuel Evans. On page 987—a footnote reads— 1. condensed from a letter written by A. Bender and quoted by Dr. Adam Sheller in an address delivered before the Mount Joy Lyceum, July 4, 1860. I realize this information does not tell you who wrote the article that appeared forty years ago in the Bulletin, but they most certainly based it on Dr. Sheller’s address! (‘‘Lift- ed’ it would be a more honest way to express it). One small discrepancy is the date of Mr. Benders arrival in Wisconsin. Dr. Sheller’s letter from Mr. Bender was written in 1859 in it, he said he (Mr. Bender) arrived in Wiscon- sin in 1854. In the reprint- ed article the date is giving for the arrival as 1885. Perhaps, by this time, you have received this information from others. If however, you have not, I trust it will be of interest to you. I enjoy reading the Times and the articles dealing with local history. Sincerely, Evelyn Johnston, Chairman Historic Research Comm. Mountville-West Hempfield Chapter 1.C.B.C.
