Basketball champs are honored The Donegal Indians, with a record of 14-0 in Section 3 and 21-4 in season play, were guests of honor at the Second Annual Basketball Banquet spon- sored by the Basketball Booster Club. President Barry Etsell presided at the dinner in the school cafeter- ia which was attended by more than 175 people. The invocation was given by Rev. Ricard Kohler. John Clark, a former high school, college, and pro- fessional basketball coach, was the Guest Speaker. He told of his experiences and . some amusing antecdotes and encouraged the boys to be loyal to their parents, school, and community and to do their very best in their sports activities. He was introduced by Coach Emil Swift. Each varsity player, JV player, manager, coach, cheerleader, stat girl, and “Don Eagle,, received door prizes and a grab bag from people in-the community. The following banners “and trophies were present- ed: Banner in recognition of the Basketball Team of 1955-56 was given to the school by John Heistand and Al Kugle, members of this championship team. Banner in recognition of the 1975-76 Section 3 Champions was presented by Rory Gallagher, Presi- dent of the Varsity Club which purchased the ban- ner. Gifts to the Cheerleaders by Miss Maile and Mrs. Dennis Engle. Ron Morris and Harvey Reem of the Marietta Jay- cees presented a plaque to the school in recognition of this year’s winning team. Mark McKercher’s family presented personalized mugs to all the Varsity players, Coach Swift, Man- ager, Dennis Finley, and Claudia Brandt (Don Eagle) Marlin Miller, represent- ing many fans and friends presented trophies to all the Varsity playes. Each trophy included the specific attri- bute each player displayed during the year. He also presented a trophy to John Fellenbaum for having been chosen to the All-County All-Star team. George McCue, on behalf of Kunkle Oil Service, presented a trophy to each player and to Coach Swift. Coach Emil Swift then had the honor to present the following trophies: Most Rebounds - Barto Most Improved Player - Kevin Bradley Most Valuable Player - John Fellenbaum He also requested a standing ovation for Rory Gallagher who, during the year, displayed good team spirit and was helpful in keeping the team in conten- tion despite the fact that he was not a ‘‘starter’’. The Basketball Booster Club (through donations made by many people) gave the following: Charms to the Cheer- leaders (presented by Bob Georgianne McCue) Hamilton watches to the Varsity Players, Coach Swift Assistant coach Robert Freund, and Manager, Dennis Finley. (Presented by Barry Etsell and Bill Barto) Mrs. Linda Ross, Art Teacher, presented a cari- cature drawing of each player and of Coach Swift. These were done in the typical pose of the individ- uals. The Cheerleaders pre- sented scrapbooks to the players and gifts to their coaches. Beautifully decorated cakes (baked by Cindy Engle) were on display and were then served as desert to climax the tasteful ham dinner catered by the Lancaster County Farm Diner. The Committee chairman in charge of arrangements included: Prizes-Bill Barto; Food-Mrs. Jerry Miller; and Decorations-Mrs. James Sarbaugh.
