That is,,he can not be on e-. qual terms with • those who .are lea by the spirit of evil. , Neat in order I suppose comes the Devil. This power appears to be in a manner more invisible than the Beast. It appears to be an invisible cause. through which evil is brought forth. chrlat east the Devils out. Persons who wore deranged and ungoverna ble were said to he possessed of devils.— Hence some evil principle must haire gained the ascendency and destroyed the government of the mind. Devil then, we might suppose to be, a pause giving rise to evil• somewhat after the manner in which a small seed in the ground, is cause of a stock of weeds; we May not know how it ever got there, but this we can knot!, that it must have been brought there by still some cause which had gone be- i fore.. The next in order, I suppose to be Satan. Here of course the Mysteries become still more heavy, and it is hardly to be expected that we c an' find words wherewith to express I what we have in view to explain. A cer tain writer says: Satan an not develop° him: self' in tla• most degraded condition of man. It is only after persons have become civilized and have obtained some knowledge of God, that Satan in his real tharacler is found to —come forth. We might attdapt to explain this matter after this manner. A man who as in the habit of taking strong drink, and is ;found lying upon the public road in a deplo rable condition is not calculated to become successful in gaining ascendency among oth er people, ro we, suppose Satan is not found amen.. the most degraded , characters of the world.' Ails real character c'nly begins to develope, itself under a form of respectability, under a form of refinement, wherewith he can gain - power with the spirit of the'world. It is to be understood_that 'Satsn does • not know, and cannot know, that-he is Satri.a =- And .herein it is that the power is found, wherewith he must be conquered. It is re markible lbat, Siftan•with intelligence, lis-knoleedge, aneall-his ingenuity, cau per ceive nothing of the mysteries of God. Ike real .character of Satan expressed in few words we ,appose co be rather su .uprising and exaltation of spirit). which to a greater or lees :extent arrays Ittelf against the' gay ailment of God. The &lest in ,order, I suppose, to be the Dragon. The word, dragen appears to come from a 'fiery body flying in the air. Dragon then might be considered the opposition a gainst God having gained great power, and moving in high places. We read in the Rev elation's (1:4) that there was , war in heaven, "Michael and his angels fought against thi3 dragon; and the dragon fought and his an gels." Here it would appear that Drawn is evil combined to overthrow the gorernment of God. Next, I suppose, comes the Serpent This word appears to have reference to the .very first cause of evils being ( palled in the llerefations, that old Serpent, and iseema to be a cause of evil so hidden, as to be in a manner, beyond the power of the human mind to,c_omprebt in some way or other to give rise to hatred, and the murder spirit. In the first• account we have of evil taking place in the world, we find the word Serpent; and it is not long un til it is said, "and Cain• rose aup against Abel his brother and slew him." In other words we might perhaps add, the Serpent lathe ve ry first cause of .dishonesty; and ultimately . brings forth deceitfulness and hatred. Next in order comes Lucifer. This name at' Cl:ee :carries us before the foundadion of the world. We read in the prophet Isaiah, chapter 14, "How art thou fallen from heav en, 0' Lneifer,' son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground which didst weaken the nations.' The word Lucifer is said to mean a • bearer of• a candle or a light, and it is supposed that the devil was an att gel of light, and becoming highly exalted made an effort to establish a government of of his own, for which he was Ultimately cast out of heaven. In tracing, up the first cause of all evil, .1 must think it is very, remarkable, that "we arc brought under a certain drift or current which would carry us in a direction where we are brought to see, that .the great first cause of all evil is exauhotion of 'spirit; And that by a succession of causes there was brought forth ? "who and what the devil is." 'h►ACIFIt/.
