Library display wall features holiday art The December Art Wall Display at the Back Mountain Memorial Library is a holiday photography exhibit by the Wyoming Valley Cam- era Club. The Wyoming Valley Camera Club has been meeting for over 40 years. Presently, 12 club members share photography tips, tricks and ideas to enhance their photographic skills. Members meet once a month to enter a monthly-themed competition and to vote for their favorite photos. In addition, the club members exhibit their photographs in the Wilkes-Barre Post Office on South Main Street, using the display’s monthly theme. Club members who will display their work are Joann Worlinsky Krista Connolly, Anna Marie Colum- bo, Tom Thomas, Carrie Cilvik, Eric Farmer, Joe-Angel Rodriguez, Dan Vestyck and Noreen Kroll. Ifyou’re like most peo- ple, though, you probably don’t realize that the word orchid comes from the Greek word "or- chis," which means “testicle.” ® Records show that the town of Helena, Montana, had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world - way back in 1888. In the early 1970s, a British plumber named John Hancock re- placed an antique toilet in the home of John Lennon, then kept the old toilet for the rest of his life. In 2010, after Hancock’s death, his heirs put it up for auction. Even the auction house was surprised when the former Beatle’s throne fetched a whopping $14,740. * You may not be aware of this, but there is a new fad that is catch- ing on among some groups across the country: tall biking. Hobby- ists construct bicycles with nor- mal-sized front and rear wheels, but with frames and seats that ex- tend anywhere from 6 to 10 feet off the ground. Some riders actually use these bikes to joust, using lances made out of PVC pipe and foam rubber. It’s unclear, howev- er, exactly how the riders mount their steeds. Dallas Alumni matmen de- feated Lake-Lehman Alumni wrestlers, 43 to 28, in the second annual Turkey Wrestling Meet at Dallas High gym Wednesday evening. The meet was spon- sored by the Dallas and Back Mountain wrestling clubs. Among the Dallas alumni were Brian Corbett, class of ‘77, Russ Johnson, class of ‘74 and Earl Monk, class of ‘74. 40 YEARS AGO -1971 Two Lake-Lehman High School seniors were among the 150 students from 15 area-wide high schools attending the re- cent Career Day at Wilkes-Barre Campus of The Pennsylvania State University. The students are Paul Adamshick and Larry Denmon. Jackee Houser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Houser, Lehman, will appear in “Holiday Revue” Nov. 26, 27 and 28, pre- sented by the Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre and directed by Miss Linda Sipple. Jackee is an eighth grade student at Lake- Lehman High School and has studied tap dancing and jazz in- terpretation. 50 YEARS AGO -1961 Tony Zachary was elected president of Dallas Community Ambulance at the annual meet- ing Sunday afternoon. Lane Jar- rett was elected first vice presi- dent, Ralph Downend second, Jack Berti third. Re-elected were secretary Marie Thevenon and treasurer Edwin Roth. There’s no keeping a good man down. He was in there pitch- ing last summer, after the sore- ness was pretty much gone from his left hand, and this year in football. 60 YEARS AGO -1951 Four Westmoreland High School students, Nancy School- ey, senior; Gail Scaffhauser and Dawn Dick, juniors; and David Vann, sophomore; attended the Tri-County Student Council Conference at Upper Moreland, Willow Grove, on Wednesday. They were accompanied by Wil- liam K.Roeder, instructor in charge of Student Council at Westmoreland. For the third successive year, Patty Cornell won the Curtis Cir- culation Company campaign for bringing in subscriptions at Lake-Noxen High School. The first two years, both a boy and a girl were selected, this year. Pat- ty topped the entire school. In recognition of the honor she re- ceived a letter from the compa- ny. 70 YEARS AGO -1941 Daddow-Isacs Post American Legion has received instructions from the War Department to construct an air alarm observa- tion post on the Sordoni farm at Alderson. When the observation post is completed it will be manned 24 hours a day — prob- ably by different observers work- ing in three-hour shifts. Dad- dow-Isaacs Post has asked for volunteers to assist in the con- struction work. MOMENTS INTIME The History Channel e On Dec. 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suf- fering from severe depression, cuts off the lower part of his left ear with a razor while staying in Arles, France. He later docu- mented the event in a painting titled "Self-Portrait With Ban- daged Ear." During his lifetime, van Gogh sold only one paint- ing. ® On Dec. 22, 1900, the first car to be produced under the “Mercedes” name is delivered to its buyer, Emil Jellinek, an Austrian car racer and auto dealer to the rich and famous. In exchange for buying 36 of the cars, the auto company agreed to name its new machine after Jellinek’s 11-year-old daught Mercedes. e On Dec. 20, 1957, rock 'n’ roll star Elvis Presley receives his draft notice for the United States Army. He served in Com- pany D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Corps in Friedberg, Germany, where he attained the rank of sergeant. e On Dec. 19, 1986, Michael Sergio, who parachuted into Game Six of the 1986 World Se- ries at New York’s Shea Stadi- um, is fined $500 and sentenced to 100 hours of community ser- vice.
