Council members unanimous- ly approved Ryan Doughton, a Democrat, to fill the vacant coun- cil seat previously occupied by Charles Musial who resigned from the position. Doughton is a municipal engineer who has worked frequently with Dallas Township, Lake Township and Lehman Township. Other appointments made were: George Gwilliam to the va- cancy board, Mayor Clarence Ho- gan and Council Member Larry Radel as tax collectors, Council Chairman Francis Kopko and council member Richard Wil- liams III to the emergency man- agement committee and Kevin Novackowski to a five-year term with the General Municipal Au- thority. Police Chief Dan Evancho an- nounced a new system called nix- le.com has been installed at the police department. The Internet system allows residents to regis- ter their e-mails or cell phones with www.nixle.com to receive live updates on emergencies. This allows officers to send warnings, right from computers in the cruisers, notifying regis- tered residents of a missing child, an accident on Route 415 or any other emergency, Evancho said. Concerns over access to a boat launch located across from the former Hanson’s Amusement Park were voiced by resident Ge- ri Bevan. She feels an access road used by many boaters and the Fish Commission may be in jeop- ardy by the recent purchase of SCOUT PACK 281 HOLDS PINEWOOD DERBY -_ we. & a__—. Williams is proposing to devel- op the land into a townhome de- velopment called Villas at Water- wood. The access road used by many may be closed, Bevan said. “If the development claims the access road and closes it from the public, it only leaves one boat launch left,” She said. Borough Attorney Charles McCormick said, through his re- search on the access road, he found it was never owned by the borough or by the state. He be- lieves the road may have been used by the original owners to ac- cess different parts of the proper- ty. Bevan found a deed stating it was a public access road and does not want to see Villas at Water- wood claim it and close it off from the public. “People have been using it for years,” Bevan said. “Have you asked PennDOT?” Chairman Kopko said it is not the responsibility of the bor- ough’s attorney to research it any further. He said McCormick was asked to find out if the access road was owned by the borough and the answer is no. After the meeting, Bevan said she was not happy with the attor- ney’s findings because she doesn’t think it is right to take a road that has been used for years by the public and make it private. She will seek other avenues to re- solve the problem. In other news, Hogan an- nounced plans for this year’s Har- veys Lake Homecoming Week- end are formulating and said Homecoming Weekend dates are August 6, 7 and 8. He added that committees are now forming. The next meeting of the Har- veys Lake Borough Council will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, in the municipal build- ing.
