Sunday, December 13, 2009 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 11 HEROES Continued from Page 1 walking toward a light and I think he told us his sister and grandmother (who are de- ceased) stopped him, turned him around and sent him back and that’s when he knew he was going to make it,” de una said. “We’re men of sci- ence and to be on the brink of something like that is nice to know.” Brian Scott Saracino, D.O. Brian Scott Saracino, D.O. knew since high school that he wanted a medical career. It was when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a med- ical technician, however, that he decided to be involved with emergency medicine. “My decision to do emer- gency medicine goes way back to my emergency med- icine time with the Air Force in ‘86 or ’87,” said Saracino, who served in the Air Force right after high school from 1985 to 1989. “I think a lot of influences came from the ER doctors I worked with back then.” The 42-year-old Shavertown resident received his bache- lor’s degree in behavioral neu- roscience from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992, then earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic | Medicine in 996. ; ( ] In 2002, Saracino was se- lected as a presidential sup- port physician in Nigeria when former President Ge- orge W. Bush spent a night there. “This was right before the Gulf War started,” he said. “He (Bush) was going to make a trip to seven or eight different countries there. And each country that he goes to, they already have three physi- cians in place there before he arrives.” From 2000 to 2003, Saraci- no served a second term in the Air Force. This time he entered as an officer and he eventually became a major. “We're men of science and to be on the brink of something like that is nice to know.” Carlo de Luna, M.D. Speaking of patient whose life he saved Saracino came to the area in 2003 and worked as an emergency room physician at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital through 2006. In January 2007, he joined Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Cen- ter as an emergency room physician, a position he holds today. Making a positive change for someone on the spot in the emergency room is what Saracino finds most rewarding about his career. The most difficult part is making deci- sions, sometimes instantly, without knowing a patient or his or her history. “In the ER, you could go through a shift where you can deliver a baby and your next patient might be 100 years old,” he said. “I just enjoy not knowing what the next thing can be.” In addition to working in the emergency room, Saraci- no is an associate professor at Temple University Medical School and the Common- wealth Medical College in Scranton. He also teaches in the physician assistant pro- gram at King’s College and has taught at Marywood Uni- versity. He and his wite, Mindy, have three children: Tanner, 7; Brayden, 6; and Kyla, 5.
