DES fourth and fifth-graders encouraged to seek Hugs, Not Drugs’ As part of the celebration of Drug Free Week at Dallas Elementary School, fourth and fifth- grade students took their favorite stuffed animals to school one day last week. The theme of the day was “Hugs, Not Drugs” and students were taught to hug their stuffed animals instead of turning to drugs. Lehman Band wins sixth place in TOB The Lake-Lehman Jr./Sr. High School Marching Band compet- ed in the Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championships on November 1 at Hershey Stadi- um. | Tournament of Bands (TOB) is i of the largest competitive band organizations in the coun- . It is divided into 13 chapters hat encompass nine states, in- luding Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, firginia and West Virginia. Lake-Lehman is a member of Chapter 7 which covers the rortheastern part of Pennsylva- pia and South/Central New York State. The band is ranked under Group I which may consist of up 30 musicians and a maximum f 30 auxiliary members. ¢ | TOB judging involves scoring on Individual and Ensemble Vi- sual Proficiency and Music, Gen- eral Effect Music (composition/ epertoire and performance/ howmanship) and General Ef- t. With 25 outstanding bands a in the Group I catego- cl dg , Lake-Lehman rose above and received a score of 89.8, achiev- ing recognition at the bronze lev- el. The theme for Lake-Lehman’s show this year was entitled “Tin- kering with Time.” The band was presented with a Tournament of @ championship plaque for “its sixth-place accomplishment. | The ensemble is under the di- ection of Kristin Barrick, Jr./Sr. igh School marching band/in- ‘strumental music teacher. PSU students upport THON The Penn State Wilkes-Barre ON Committee recently held Penny Wars competition to raise money for the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), offer- ing students a chance to sabotage each other and have one of their Be take a pie in the face. For one week, cans were set up the Student Commons, one for each campus club’s president, and students had the chance to “vote” on the club president they would like to see hit with a pie by placing money in their cans. In Penny Wars, each penny was worth one point while any other coin or bill is worth negative C ints, according to the denom- Don of the coin or bill.
