Egan was invited to attend the Ju- nior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference after having attended the Junior National Young Leaders Con- ference in Washington, D.C. last spring. The conference, sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, invited nearly 3,000 middle school scholars from across the coun- try to attend a five-day conference where they learned about the roles and responsibilities of the president, the electoral process and the attri- butes of leadership. Scholars took part in various educa- tional activities and were addressed by General Colin Powell (Ret.), for- mer vice-president and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Al Gore and Erik Wei- henmayer, author and the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Ev- erest. In celebration of the historic event, Egan and the other scholars attended the inaugural ceremony on the Na- tional Mall, watched the inaugural pa- rade and later celebrated at an Inau- gural Gala.
