The former Mary Adelaide Alves, she was born Oct. 1, 1911 in Plaisance, Guyana, South America. She received her ele- mentary and high school educa- tion in Plaisance and George- town, Guyana, formerly British Guiana. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas on Feb. 2, 1937, becoming the first Guyanese Sis- ter to enter the Sisters of Mercy at Dallas. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from College Miser- icordia and taught for a total of 39 years. In 1978, Sister Corinne be- came a pastoral minister at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Georgetown, Guyana. She retired from active duty in 1991 and returned to Mercy Center, Dallas, to the prayer ministry. Surviving are her brothers, Michael Basil, Miami, Fla.; John Patrick, Surrey, England; several nieces and nephews; and Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community. DAVIS-DorisR., 86, of Dallas, formerly of West Pittston, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 in Green- briar Estates, Dallas. Born in Pittston on Dec. 6, 1922, she graduated from Pitt- ston High School and was a for- mer member of First Baptist Church, Pittston. Surviving are sons, Donald, San Ramon, Calif.; William, El- kins Park; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. DEMBOWSKI - Frank S., 88, of Dallas, formerly of West Pitt- ston and Kingston, died Mon- day, Jan. 26, 2009 at the Mercy Center, Dallas. Born July 21, 1920 in Nanti- coke, he was a U.S. Army veter- an, serving his country honor- ably during World War II with the 449th Anti-Aircraft Battal- ion. During his time of service to his country, he was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Cam- paign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Med- al with five Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead and a World War II Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on Novem- ber 13, 1945, he attained the rank ance Company for 31 years. Af- ter retirement, he worked as a ranger and starter for club events at the Fox Hill Country Club. He was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church, West Pittston, and its Holy Name Society, where he served as past president. He was also a former member of its Ush- ers Club, a member and past president of the Pittston Lions Club, a member of the AM- VETS, Nanticoke, and the Wilkes-Barre Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also volunteered his time at the De- partment of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Plains Town- ship. Surviving are his children, F. David, Kingston Township; Ma- rilyn Cerase, Alfonse, Virginia Beach, Va.; many nieces and ne- phews. Sr., 88, for- merly of Shavertown and Zeph- ryhills, Fla., died Jan. 29, 2009 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas. Born on Jan. 9, 1921 in Wilkes- Barre, he had attended Westmo- reland schools. Prior to his re- tirement, he was employed by Natona Mills, Dallas, as a dye house operator and later in the maintenance department. He was a World War II veter- an, serving with the U.S. Army 8th Air Corps in England. He was a past member of the Dallas American Legion and a member of St. Therese’s Church, Shaver- town. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, the former Anne M. Ho- hol; sons, John, Hunlock Creek; William, Harveys Lake; and Eu- gene, Rochester, N.Y.; brother, Martin T., Wyoming; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grand- children; numerous nieces and nephews. Surviving are two grandchil- dren and two great-grandchil- dren. Barre, he was an Army veteran of World War II. He distin- guished himself in the Europe- an-African-Middle Eastern The- ater and was active for almost three years of battle, including the Invasion of Anzio, Italy. He was a paint technician for Motor Twins Ford for more than 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Parish of Saint Therese in Shavertown and the American Legion Daddow- Isaacs Post 672 in Dallas. Surviving are children, Tho- mas, Dallas; and Miriam Stone, Wyomissing; four grandchil- dren; and three great-grandchil- dren. ROMAN - Phyllis M., 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born Nov. 20, 1922 in Ithaca, N.Y., she was a graduate of King- ston High School, Class of 1941. She had been employed at the G. Young Insurance Agency and then worked as a secretary and babysitter for Wilson H. Flock during the early stages of the agency. Later, she was secretary to the membership secretary of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA. She was active in Cub Scout- ing and Girl Scouting and had held a number of offices, includ- ing president of the Dallas Wom- en of the Kiwanis. She was a member of Saint Therese’s Church, Shavertown. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Vincent D. Roman, P.E.; sons, Vincent T. Roman, M.D., Tulsa, Okla.; James J. Ro- man, Kingston; daughters, Mary Lu Tristran, Dover, Del.; There- se M. Jabon, Chicago, Ill.; eight grandchildren; five great-grand- children; nieces and nephews. WILLIAMS - William R,, VMD, 75, of Tunkhannock, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 in Ann’s Grove Personal Care Home, Tunkhannock. Born in Plymouth on Feb. 5, 1933, he was a 1949 graduate of Tunkhannock High School, where he was valedictorian, and a graduate of Penn State Univer- sity and the University of Penn- sylvania Veterinarian Medical School. After graduation, he was em- ployed by a local veterinarian and worked as a federal meat in- spector for several years. He was the founder and former owner of the Sugar Hollow Trout Hatch- ery. Surviving are sons, Dr. Kendal P., Philadelphia; Dr Daniel C., Tunkhannock; and Jonathan K., Ecuador; brothers, Thomas L. and Neil R., both of Tunkhan- nock; and four grandchildren. The first drive will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Misericordia University. While this drive is on campus, it is a community drive and all donors are welcome. A second drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Yalick Farms, Routes 415 and 118, Dallas.
