Born in Old Forge on May 1, 1917, she resided at the Meadows Apartments for 20 years. She was a member of The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Lake Silk- worth. Born on September 28, 1927 in Philadelphia, she attended Lans- dale High School and lived in Oaklyn, N.J. for more than 20 years before settling in Dallas in 1969. She was an active member of the Center Moreland United Methodist Church where she - taught Sunday school, served as Lay Leader and was a pillar of the church community. MOYER - Wendi L., of Tunk- hannock, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock. Born in West Grove on January 30, 1958, she was a 1975 graduate of Solanco High School, Quarry- ville. She had been employed at the Salvation Army Store in Tunkhannock. She is survived by her hus- band, Philip L.; son, P. Corey, of Tunkhannock; brothers, Kevin Hackman and Donald Beyer, both of Scranton; sisters, Kim and Joy Hackman, both of Scran- ton; and Deborah Welch, of Tunk- hannock; several nieces and ne- phews. ROOT - Alan R. Jr, 45, of Trucksville, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Kingston, he was em- ployed at Marvel Kitchens and Modern Plastics of Wilkes-Barre. He was also a self-employed cabi- net maker. Surviving are his mother, Lin- da Franklin Root; his wife, Lisa Megni; a sister, Amy, Shaver- town; a brother , Dale, Trucks- ville; one nephew and one niece. SMITH - Eleanor L. Smith, of Dallas, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at home. WARD - Mary Heness, 89, of Dallas, died Sunday, May 11, 2008. Born in Edwardsville, she was a graduate of Edwardsville High School, Bucknell Junior College and Bucknell University. At Bucknell, she belonged to the honorary societies, Kappa Delta Epsilon and Alpha Kappa Delta. She did graduate work at Mary- wood College and the University of Scranton, obtaining a master’s degree. She worked during her college years as an American Red Cross lifesaving and water safety in- structor at the Wilkes-Barre YW- CA. She was widely known for starting the first synchronized swimming group in the state and participating in AAU meets. During World War II, she was director of the YWCA Youth Cen- ter in Wilkes-Barre. She received a commendation from President Harry Truman for volunteer work teaching American Red Cross survival swimming tech- niques to those in the armed ser- vices. Mrs. Ward briefly worked at the YWCA of Jamestown, New York, and later returned to be- come program director at the YWCA in Wilkes-Barre. : She worked at the Children’s Service Center of Wilkes-Barre and was executive director of the West Side Settlement House in Luzerne. She retired in 1984 from the position of school soci worker for Dallas School District™ As a staff member of the Dallas School District, she developed a comprehensive Migrant Summer Education program for three counties. The program was de- signed to ensure continuing edu- cation for migrant children and was adopted as a model, first by: the state of Pennsylvania and then the U.S. Health, Education and Welfare Department. Her volunteer activities revolv- ed around the SPCA of Luzerne County where she was a board member and past president. She, was a dedicated Girl Scout leader: and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre. She was a charter member of the West Side Busi: ness and Professional Women’s Club and a member of Serve Your City Club. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Rho Chap- ter. : Surviving are her husband, Henry H., of Dallas; daughter, Elaine L; one granddaughter; one nephew and three great-nieces. Born in Ramey on November 27,1917, she was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church, Pikes Creek and the Shick-Shawnee Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Matron of the Or- der from 1976 to 1977 and 1990 to 1991. Surviving are daughters, Con- stine Lewis, of Kentfield, Calif.; and Frances Gensel, of Sweet Val- ley; one niece; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
