Residents were evacuated the morning of Wednesday, March 5 and forced to stay out of their homes until the water receded. Bekanich toured hard-hit areas of Franklin Township Monday af- ternoon with representatives from Pennsylvania Senator Lisa Baker’s office and Pennsylvania Representative Karen Boback’s office, along with township offi- cials. These areas include Valley wis Road and Municipal Road. Repairs to Cider Run Road from 2006 flooding were com- pleted last year with $58,000 of FEMA money. “A lot of it is wiped out again,” said Art Owen, roadmaster and zoning officer for Franklin Town- ship. Runoff on Municipal Road caused deep trenches to form on the sides of the road between Sut- ton Creek Road and the munici- pal building, making the road nearly impassable. Maureen Oremus, second as- sistant fire chief for Franklin Township, said it would be diffi- under normal circumstances. Now, she said, it would be nearly impossible, though she stressed homes would not be in danger be- cause a line could be laid from the municipal building or West Eighth Street down onto the road. Water on the other side of Mu- nicipal Road, past Sutton Creek Road, was still flowing downhill Monday afternoon at such a high velocity, it sounded like a creek or stream. On a section of Valley View Road, runoff undercut the as- phalt by about two feet. No county funds are available kanich says. But the county may be able to loan equipment and manpower to the township. Franklin Township Chairman of Supervisors Michael Prokop- chak asked Bekanich if the coun- ty can donate sandbags in case of future flooding. Bekanich said that would be possible. Prokopchak asked for filled sandbags because the township only has two full-time employees. Bekanich said he would look into the matter.
