Students got involved with the day's activities by participating in Crazy Hat Day. Lands at Hillside Farms expands product offerings in local markets The Lands at Hillside Farms recently expanded its product offerings into select local super- markets in the Wyoming Valley. Andy Check, Executive Direc- tor ofthe two-year-old non-profit organization, announced that Hillside ice-cream is now avail- able at both Gerrity’s and Schiels Markets at all their Lu- zerne County stores. In addition, Wegmans Wilkes- Barre store offers Hillside’s re- nowned eggnog during the holi- days. illside’s dairy is the sole sur- viving fluid milk bottling plant in Luzerne County. In addition to its milk products, The Lands at Hillside Farms manufactures ice-cream for both the retail and wholesale markets. Consisting of 409 acres of land in Kingston and Jackson townships, the farm possesses over a dozen structures built be- tween the 1820s and 1900, in ad- dition to more modern structur- es. The Lands at Hillside Farms assumed all management re- sponsibilities for the 127-year- old landmark property on Dg cember 1, 2005. The new n profit, an IRS approved 501 (c) 3 charity, was established to pre- serve this historic property and to educate the public on the ben- efits of healthy eating and local agriculture. In addition to scheduling nu- merous events for the public, The Lands at Hillside Farms has developed a strong educational program aimed at students from kindergarten through high school. ie Michael Calkins of Dallas and Adam Bilder of Harveys Lake had the opportunity to serve as guest pages in No- vember at the House of Rep- resentatives in Harrisburg. Both students were invited by Representative Dr. Karen Boback, District 17. Calkins and Bilder were in- troduced in the House Chamber by Speaker of the House Dennis O’Brien. Their mothers, Heather Calkins and Gloria Bilder, were ac- knowledged as being presi- dent in the visitors’ gallery prior to the day’s opening session. Calkins, son of Peter and Heather Calkins, is currently a sophomore at Dallas High School and is active in Boy Scout Troop 281, cross coun- try, track and ski club. He plans to pursue a career in the Naval Academy upon graduation. Bilder, son of Edward and Gloria Bilder, is currently a sophomore at Holy Redeem- er High School. He is in- volved in the school ski club and plans to pursue a career in physical therapy or the Air Force upon graduation.
