SUBMITTED PHOTO This banner hung in the Dallas High School gymnasium the day the Lady Mountaineers hosted the girls basketball team from Lake-Lehman in support of the Lady Black Knights whose teammate, Justine Martin, had been killed in an automobile accident earlier in the week. Honoring No. 21 en tragedy struck the student body at Lake- Lehman High School last week, students from Dallas went from being rivals to being a support group. Sixteen-year-old Justine Martin, a mem- ber of the Lake-Lehman girls basketball team, was killed in an automobile accident the day the Dallas and Lake-Lehman basketball teams were scheduled to play against each other. The game was postponed and, instead, a candlelight vigil to celebrate Martin’s life was held that evening. Members of the Dallas girls basketball team and their coaches not only attended the vigil but wore Lake-Lehman pins with Martin’s uniform number on them. At the make-up basketball game on February 2, the Dallas basketball players and their coaches still had the black and gold pins on their jackets. The Dallas basketball booster club solicited donations for Martin’s family and the Dallas gymnasium was adorned with a banner reading, “Together We Remember #21.” The banner was decorated in black, gold, blue and white — the colors of both Lake-Lehman and Dallas while black, gold, blue and white balloon bouquets filled the gym. Lake-Lehman junior varsity coach Barry Horvath started the JV game with just four players; not filling the starting spot normally occupied by Martin and Lake-Lehman players hung a t-shirt on an unoccupied chair on the sideline. The Lake-Lehman girls varsity basketball team played one of its best games ever, coming away with a 53-50 victory over Dallas. Members of both the Lake-Lehman boys varsity basket- ball team and the junior high boys basketball team were on hand to cheer on the Lady Black Knights. During a recent Lake-Lehman girls basketball game, an empty chair was draped with the No. 21 t-shirt worn by Justine Martin, a member of the team who was killed in an automobile accident on Route 29 last week. Alex Lubinski, shown above, painted Martin's uniform number on her arm. Watching the game are Ellen Matza (No. 12) and Devon Boyle (No. 32).
