Seeing friends, old stu- dents of Jean's and former patients of Peter’s make it worth the twice- yearly trip twice to perform in the area. Performing requires a lot of stamina and communication as the music is played at a fast rate of speed and the dances are long. The first fiddler needs to be in constant communication with the caller. The caller exchanges a look with the first fiddler and the fiddler then lifts his foot to relay information to the band. In order to play correctly and efficiently, alot of practice is re- quired. “Ian really gets after us and says, ‘Are you looking at your music? it gives them something positive to do with their family.” The Warrington Family Band changes its performance each Ja- nuary by using new instruments. Ian is taking up the mandolin, Ben is learning the banjo and Jean is ex- ploring percussion. The band also recruits dance participants to join them on stage and play instru- ments, thus altering the music and preventing it from becoming rou- tine. David Martin of Center More- land, coordinator for the North- east Pennsylvania Folklore Socie- ty, says the Warringtons have been playing at the dances each January for approximately the past 10 years.
