Metz Sr., of Dallas, has been elected as di- rector of Superior Bancorp, a $2.8 billion thrift holding com- pany headquartered in Birming- ham, Alabama, and Superior Bank, a southeastern communi- ty federal savings bank. John C. Metz Jr., son of Metz Sr., opened the fourth location of his popular Marlow’s Tavern eat- ery in Kennesay Georgia, a sub- urb of Atlanta, on December 11. Metz Sr. has served as director of People’s Community Bank, now a division of Superior Bank, since 1999. He is chairman and CEO of Metz Enterprises and Metz & Associates Ltd., a regional food service provider operating in a wide variety of settings, such as major hospitals, public school districts, colleges and universi- ties. He currently serves as on the board of directors for the Nation- al Restaurant Association and is also chairman for Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRoNA). Metz Sr. began his career in the food service management in- dustry with the founding of Cus- tom Management Corporation. His personal success is well- documented by his peers through a variety of awards, in- cluding such industry prizes as the International Foodservice Manufacturer Association’s Sil- ver Plate Award, Restaurant Business Magazine’s Leadership Award, Nation’s Restaurant News Golden Chain Award (2002) and MUFSO Operator of the Year (2003). In 1998 he was honored by Johnson and Wales University when he received a Doctorate of Business Administration in Food service — Honoris Causa. Metz has a devotion to educa- tion that led to his joining the Board of Overseers of Harvard University and becoming a board trustee at Misericordia University. Additionally, he is a trustee board member with the National Restaurant Associ- ation’s Educational Foundation, the same organization where he also serves as a board director, and has remained an active member of the Culinary Insti- tute of America.
