Mountain Post won the first game, 6-5 and the second one, 8-5. Mike Wrenn, Chris Wychock and Bill Baratta also doubled for Moun- tain Post. Bedrin was 4-for-8 at the late in both games. ~ Mountain Post’s Dave Mastellar picked up a complete-game win in game one, pitching seven innings and striking out five batters. Mastellar got the win in game two, pitching 1/3 innings in relief of Matt Lamore, who went the first five and fanned 10. Bill Holena doubled in game one for Back Mountain. Pat Murray, Dy- lan Feeley and Ryan Konopki picked up doubles in the nightcap. Back Mountain 12 Wilkes-Barre 11 Kevin Racemus was 2-for<4 with a double to lead Back Mountain to a victory on Friday. Matt Ruch also doubled in a 1-for-3 performance. Dwight Smith and Mike Burns had two hits apiece for Wilkes-Barre while Dave Lewis doubled and home- red. Back Mountain 14 Greater Pittston 2 Tom Parrish was 2-for4 with a dou- ble to lead Back Mountain. Tom Per- ry went 3-for4 at the plate and Ryan Konopki hit 2-for-5 on the day. Gerrid Kohli earned the win in the short- ened, six-inning contest, logging one strikeout and walking only two bat- ters. Greater Pittston’s Rob Lemoncelli and Sam Andrewscavage each went 2-for-3 on the day. Dunn lifts Stars Throws one-hitter to lead Back Mountain American past Northwest in LL action Shane Dunn threw a one-hitter and struck out three as Back Mountain American defeated Northwest, 4-1, Monday in a Dis- trict 16 Little League Baseball winners bracket game in the West Division. Dunn allowed a first-inning sin- gle to Josh Kittle, whose hit scored Brandon Zagata. Zagata had reached on an error. Dunn, Harry Parkhurst and Jim Roccograndi all singled and had an RBI. Neil Shaver and Alex Zubko also hit safely for Ameri- can. Back Mountain National 18 West Pittston 4 (4 innings) Alex Barilla and Eric Ringsdorf both hit three-run homers to lead National in a loser bracket con- test in the West division. Brian Stepniak struck out 10 in the win and had a pair of hits at the plate, along with J.T. Carter and Josh McEntee. Jake Granteed smacked a three-run homer for West Pitt- son, which got singles from Matt Klimas and Trent Grove. Back Mountain American 9 Bob Horlacher 7 Eric Zawatski struck out five in relief to pick up the win and was 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace Amer- ican. Shane Dunn added two hits and an RBI. Harry Parkhurst and George Parkhurst each had a dou- ble. Horlacher’s Gus Diana was 3- for-3 with a homer. Brady Butler added two hits. Losing pitcher Cole Wright fanned eight. Wyoming/West Wyoming 4 Harveys Lake O Eric Walkowiak threw a com- plete-game four-hitter and struck out eight to pick up the win. Christian Skrepenak and Eric Ringsdorf had the hits for Nation- al. Governor offers grant support for Land Trust effort Governor Edward G. Rendell has announced grant support for the North Branch Land Trusts efforts to purchase the development rights on 1,671 acres on two properties in Lu- zerne County. The grants total So and will be used to place . onservation protection agreements (called conservation easements) on 1,415 acres of the Bear Creek Camp in Bear Creek Township, and 256 acres of the American Legions property in Mountain Top. Executive Director of the Land Trust, Frank H. Oliver said, “With these grant dollars, the Land Trust will protect forever two important Luzerne County assets for future gen- erations to enjoy. Moreover, both these organizations will use their pro- ceeds to improve and maintain their properties. Everyone benefits from these transactions.” Funding for the grants comes from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Growing Greener II and Keystone 93, a DCNR fund generated from a portion of the realty transfer tax. Growing Greener II is a voter-ap- proved, $625 million bond issue that is used to clean up rivers and streams; protect natural areas, open spaces and working farms; and shore up key programs to improve quality of life and revitalize communities across the commonwealth. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES Rangers 10, Astros 8 Peter Kuritz started a key two-out rally in the sixth inning with a triple and scored the go-ahead run as the Rangers defeated the Astros, 10-8, to win the Back Mountain Little overall championship. Kuritz tripled with two outs in the sixth and was knocked in on a single by Kyle Ra- zawitch. The Rangers picked up an insurance run and Chad DeBona relieved pitcher Shane Dunn to shut down the Astros to preserve the win. The Rangers went up, 5-1, early in the game behind the hitting of DeBona, Jason Simonovitch, and Greg Petorak. The Astros stormed back to tie the game a eight, in the fifth with key hits from Brian Stepniak, and Alex Barilla. AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Rangers 16, Red Sox 6 Greg Petorak shut down the Red Sox, striking out six, as the Rangers clubbed the Red Sox, 16-6, to win the American League championship. Chad DeBona had three hits for the Rangers and Shane Dunn and Bill Gately chipped in with two each. The Red Sox were led by Neil Shaver who had two hits including a home run, and JJ McGovern with a single and a dou- ble. NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Astros 1, Pirates 0 Brian Stepniak pitched a complete game shut out, striking out 11, as the Astros clipped the Pirates, 1-0, to win the Nation- al League Championship. JT Carter singled in the first inning and stole home to score the only run of the game. Jay Dawsey and Stepniak each had two hits for the Astros. Nate Vario struck out six for the Pirates, while Mike Romanoski and Brian Banas had hits for the Bucs. SPORTS BRIEFS Lake-Lehman schedules fall sports physicals Lake-Lehman Junior-Senior High School will conduct fall sports physicals in the nurse’s office at the junior-senior high building on the following dates: Monday, July 9, at 9 a.m. - All senior high girls participating in fall sports Monday, July 23, at 5 p.m. - Junior high girls only Wednesday, July 25, at 9 a.m. - All senior high boys fall sports Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 9 a.m. - Junior high boys in fall sports (This will be the final day of exams for all boys and girls in both junior and senior high school. There will not be a make-up day this year.) Students are requested to arrive prompt- ly at the time stated on the day of the physicals. Feinstein scores hole in one Jane Feinstein, of Shavertown, had a hole in one on Thursday, June 21, 2007 during the ladies weekly golf event a the Huntsville Golf Club. Feinstein aced the 105-yard fifth hole using an eight iron. He shot was witnessed by fellow Hunts- ville members Meg Cramton, Phyllis Greenwald and Donna Zampetti.
