Sunday, June 17, 2007 COMMUNITY THE POST PAGE 7 The North Branch Land Trust was recently selected as one of 23 land conservation organizations from 16 states to participate in a second round of testing of a new national accreditation program. The program will recognize land conservation organizations, also known as land trusts, that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. The nation’s nearly 1,700 land trusts have protected over 11.9 million acres of land. The North Branch Land Trust, headquartered in Trucksville, fo- cuses its conservation efforts on the watershed lands that frame the North Branch of the Susque- hana River and on Northeastern Peansylvania’s lands that com- its agricultural heritage. Q- its founding in 1994, North ch Land Trust has protected t { } mare than 7,000 acres with the cooperation of their landowners in seven counties. At the end of 2005, the last year for which data * are available, North Branch Land * Trust ranked sixth in number of actes protected in the Common- wealth of Pennsylvania. Frank Oliver, executive direc- tor, explained “Accreditation is a new credential for land trusts and a new process for everyone in- vaved. We think that objective scrutiny of the land trust commu- nify will increase public confi- dence in the work we do, and if we're successful, we’ll be in a po- sifion to help and encourage oth- erconservation organizations at- tan the designation.” The North Branch Land Trust isone of 44 land trusts that are pi- laing the program, operated by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, this year. Land trusts volunteered to be part of the program, and those selected to participate represent a diversi- ty of land trust sizes, geographic locations and types of land pro- tected. They will help the Com- mission improve the effective- ness and efficiency of the pro- gram before it goes nationwide next year. The Commission, an inde- pendent program of the Land Trust Alliance, was created in 2006. “In an era when the public is demanding accountability from government and nonprofit organizations, independent land trust accreditation will help pro- vide the assurance of quality and permanence of land conservation the public is looking for,” ex- plained Executive Director of the Commission, Tammara Van Ryn. The accreditation program will be tested in 2007 and will be avail- able to interested organizations starting in 2008. At that time, land trusts can join the ranks of other nonprofit organizations that gain professional recogni- tion through accreditation, such as museums, z00s, aquariums, colleges and hospitals. Accredit- ed land trusts will be able to dis- play a seal indicating to the public that they meet national stan- dards for excellence, uphold the public trust and ensure that con- servation efforts are permanent. Van Ryn emphasized, “We are extremely grateful to the land trusts that volunteered to be part of the pilot accreditation pro- gram. These organizations are willing to demonstrate publicly their commitment to high stan- dards of ethics and operations and serve the land conservation {Lassie ¢ Really Cooking Cafe & Catering na Comfort Food With A Contemporary Twist 9 Out Of 10 Dads a Sunday Brunch at Really etter than a neck tie! ee that Cooking Is Sunday Brunch 8:00 to 4:00 Dinner 4:00 to 8:00 Chef Gregory will be at the Piano Reservations Suggested Mon. - Thurs. 11 to 9 ~ Fri-Sat. 11010 ~ Sun. 11t0 & 31 Tunkhannock Highway ( 309 North) Dallas, PA 186612 570-674-5668 Reservations Accepted 1 CITRYCT los oY TTT TO [Te ITT Sicilian Style Pizza, Our Wings & Other Menu Items Eat In Or Take Out! Typically, these agreements are donated by the landowner, and the federal government en- courages such donations through the tax codes. Less frequently, the Land Trust will seek financial resources to purchase the devel- opment rights on land. Owner- ship of the land does not change with a conservation agreement. Landowners maintain ownership and continue to manage their land’s resources within the re- strictions of the conservation agreement, and they can sell the property or bequeath it to their heirs. A conservation agreement simply limits or prohibits devel- opment according to the individ- ual easement’s specifications. The nonprofit Land Trust relies almost exclusively on member- ships, gifts, and grants for its work. The Land Trust Accreditation Commission will award the ac- creditation seal to community in- stitutions that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. The Com- mission, an independent pro- gram of the Land Trust Alliance established in 2006, is governed a volunteer board of diverse land conservation and nonprofit man- agement experts from around the country.
